I live in the hills about 400ft above sea level, above a largely populated city....

Think it would be a fun hobby to get into, no one I know has one. The local Sheriffs have one, and I figure I must get on the same level as them...

Thinking of getting this one on a demo I saw... http://www.dji.com/product/phantom-3/feature
HD camera, 12 megapixel, fly's over a mile away, auto takeoff and land, use from phone...

no, I don't own one. here, it is illegal to fly one over someone elses property unless you are about 500 feet up, I think. that keeps them out of range of my 10 gauge shotgun...

I just want to fly one above the clouds been watching those youtube vids, be cool to have that footage. Phantom's look nice esp the new 3. Go check out the OFM GQ-8 for fun, its used for professional aerial filming, pretty cool but expensive. Seen a bunch of videos with the DJI F550.

I just got into the hobby of 2WD Slashes..which is a short course Truck 1/10 scale...It's fast and does jumps and stuff.I'm using Lipo batteries and see other people having drones or quad-copters with cams on them.Heard that some time flying and it doesn't last long(5-10 min) and one needs a light or beep to tell them the lipo battery is low and bring it in which is either one,the remote control or the light under the quad-copter.

Got to remember,,,parts break and you will need to replace them...I do with my Slash and go to Ebay to get parts or go to the hobby shop or live near one.I got a Box full of new parts just waiting for it to break. There is nothing that can't be replaced.

Hope the same can happen with the quad-copter.4 New brushless motors, esc (electronic speed control) and clean up the drone, new remote control and some new blades...see what can be replaced, seems salvageable. It's not that hard,Lipo battery, wires to the esc then to the motors.Get the rust off the Screws too...It's ugly..lol

Thats a base model bro, not even close the the same as the phantom 3.
Even without the cam, the phantom has tons of features are only found in kits for 2500 3 grand. Like the range and the software used on the controller, it also has sensors built in to make inside an tight spaces esier to maneuver.
Im fonna hit up the professional version, it does everything the real real expensive rigs do except have dual operator modes.

I belong to a club, and machine parts.

There are options from literally $20 - $15,000 at the meetings.

There is a Cheerson pocket drone for $20 and there are multiple gimbal machines for film production with 2 operators for $15,000+.

imo $2,000+ and you should be making a return on cash with it. $1,000 under is hobbyist.

With Google getting the OK to fly drones to deliver products,I figured they may have to make a drone unit with maybe 20 employees in the drone dept and it would help to learn how to fix drones.Apprentices and repair shop.Look out for job openings.

2 or 3 people...hell no.

You'll need more people.

Just like a Real Airline :)

I would say..

I would say..

The controller is probably the most expensive part, if that's good you could fix it.

For kicks I like to fly my Estes Nano quad(s). It's the size of a soda cracker and has flashing lights which help at night (so you can see them). They were $39.99 so I bought 6 of them. They are a blast to fly even indoors. These QuadCopters are fast and fly high.

Across the street from where my company was located there was a Drone company Dronefly .com . So some people are trying to make it work.

I remember seeing on the news about them getting burglarized.

So  Good Luck in your ventures

What you think of that drone in the picture.Easily Salvageable?

I see the body just needs to be cleaned up and new screws and other parts.Brushless motors and lipo.Could fly again.

The frame is probably fine; doesn't look cracked or damaged. I'd spend $40-$80 on motors on ebay and rebuild it with arduino's freeware.

Google arducopter and/or diydrones.com

gps $30, flight display $15, arduino $10-$40, etc. lots of low dollar parts - a little harder than legos, but the same idea. (ebay)

I'm newbish on drones, and newbish too as far as electronics engineering and running a mill goes - but the ideas are pretty simple and straight forward.

You can build one for a few hundred. I saw one made out of wood.

Just got a X5c-1. Thing is awesome, although the learning curve is a bit steeper than I expected.
