I got a whole colony of red ants in my soil containers. Wasn't too worried until I saw they are spreading to surrounding containers and attacking earthworms which they are finding under the mulch layer.
Not sure how big an issue that would be beyond the worm problem, but I like to use these liquid "Terro" bait stations where they drink it and take it back to share with the colony. Have used them for a few years to keep ants under control, seems to eliminate them after about a week of feeding. Active ingredient is Borax, less than ten% I believe. Now that I am typing this I'm kicking myself for not making my own homemade version since it's cheap and effective.
Borax, sugar or honey, and water mixed well. Place the dish or small container filled with the mix in the area where the ants are traveling. If the ants are dying in the dish, you got too much borax in the mix.
Thanx guys I will try the borax. It is heart breaking to see my beloved worms wriggling and writhing as the ants attack them. These are very aggressive ants!
