Remove any ants from the topsoil by hand, Give the plants a deep watering until water comes out the holes in the bottoms of the pots.

Elevate the pots so that it its very difficult for ants to reach the pots. Wipe out any ant trails with a moist paper towell and make sure they all die.

Dude you must have never had ant before cuz that won't do it seriously. If you know anything about coco you'll know you always water till runoff.Water dont kill ants just deter for a short while.I BOMBED the room with DR. DOOM and wipe off all dead ants etc. They came back!!My plants are ALWAYS elevated as they are in trays 2 1/2 feet off the floor.Ants will reach anything no mater what practically.I need advice from somebody who has ant try to set up shop in their coco like thery are mine.thanks if anybody can give me something I can really use.not water hehe.nuggler

That's crazy. Can you make little moats around your plants? Like fill some tubs with water, then set the plants on something in the tubs so they aren't sitting in the water?

....anybody you can borrow an anteater from :D...sorry...

Spray some nar-nar shit (Raid?) where they are coming in? or make a ring of oil around the entrance?

How about watering with neem to get them out of the pots?

Seems like you should be able to just water with something they don't like, like garlic or cayenne? I've made a tea for organic pest control that your ants would probably hate. That coco will soak that shit up and them ants will peace out to your kitchen quick enough.

Oh wow. *scary* I have no idea what you can use, but I would definitely try something organic first if they're living in your coco. Many pesticides are made to linger. (Google says grits.. ?)

But yeah, ants are terrible to get rid of. We've gone NBC (Nuclear Biological Chemical) on them here to keep them out of the house. :D :D It was like ant WW3 when it started getting warm.

Every spring since I switched to coco, I run into the same problem. I've never really found anything that works 100%. Gone thru traps, neem, sprays and what not. GH makes this liquid that is like 70 bux, but it kills everything, and I've used it several times in flower. Lemme go see if I can find the bottle. It has killed ants, thrips, fungus nats, and mites so far.

It's called AZA Max. It's expensive, but kicks ass! I use it, and I medicate for lung cancer. I've been guaranteed it's non toxic. Good luck!!

Man, I have to agree, ants are one of the hardest things to get rid of. First I tried submerging the pots in water for an hour or so. It just made a few float away. Seriously, I looked in there and they're all walking around just as if it was air and not water.

Best I can suggest is whatever ant dust you choose sprinkled under the pots. A problem arises in that the dust I was using (think it was made by Hortico and very much non organic) only works on some ants, and I would suspect most treatments would affect different ants differently (but who knows). These were big black ones and the hortico did nothing. It worked for termites and another smaller type of ant though. Also helps to have the surrounding weeds/twigs cleared away. Once I had done the dusting under the pot, but there was a twig giving them a trail over it, and up to the top of the pot. Nowdays I just try to avoid ant ridden areas because I like chemicals about as much as the next guy.

as ethnobotanica says, the best prevention is a moat round your pots, obviously you dont want the pots standing in water the whole time though.

Funny, I just had an ant problem too.
Lots of little red ants got into my cloner(diy ez cloner), and got sucked through the pump and clogged all my mister jets. All my clones were completely limp. Cleaned them out and they all bounced back.
I used SM90 to get rid of them. SM90 is coriander oil and I poured it straight from the jug all around the cloner. They died and none came back. They were still in the room, but they can't cross the now dry SM90.
