ANT HILL MEDIUM?

as i gurrilla grow, ive been doing this fer a few years and havent seen any mention of this. in the northern US prarie/southern Canada boreal interface, northern michigan, northern wisconsin ,northern minnesota, are these large ant colonies.. large ants with large hills. non biting, more a carpenter type ant. . in natural clearings in the woods or meadows or along field edges are these ant hills. 3 ft hi , 6 ft dia. or smaller. i dig em out about 1/2 way but to get the queen, i go deep so to nutralize em. i plant my month old clones in em. waaay good natural drainage. sometimes i mix in MG potting soil. sometimes bagged topsoil. at times, when i find a good grow area with no ant hill, i will dig up and use a ant hill to make the medium. any one else done this? BTW -i have never had a critter fuck with em since i started using ant hills

Destroying ecosystems is not exactly what I'd suggest for a grow... you should take a look at this thread:

Outdoor Growing Ethics

Are you sure you have no other solution?

Be a responsible grower/toker. Help Nature and let Nature help you.

Peace

Just have to think of it in a positive light, he's preventing errosion by planting in the ant bed, and nature helped him out by giving him the ants 3ft high by 6 foot diameter pile of dirt, who'd they take that from lol. Mother nature is cool :) Now wheres my deer jerky...

No. He's hurting the ecosystem.

Its an interesting idea in that I saw a show on discovery about ants and at least in south america, other insects and large creatures stay away from ants. Of course they are army ants but i know some chemical is secreted and maybe it would keep pests away?

^^most likely because they dont want to be ant food. almost anything can become ant food, pests or even bigger animals. i wouldnt go eradicate a good ant colony maybe find one thats been abandoned or taken over.

using a ant hill aint zactly whut i'd call destroying a ecosystem. there are 1,000's of these ant hills within a mile of where i live. and MABE 3 or 4 of these are in a suitable location for guerrilla planting. every year a ant colony can, if conditions are perfect, can and will start dozens of new colonies. i dont want to get in a pissin' contest but i do cop to shooting several deer, dozens of ducks, several limits of grouse, take many limits of crappies and walleyes, spear northern pike, pick several gallons of blueberries every year and chase the deer off the highways with my motorcycle. if you found a colony of ground hornets (yellow jackets) in your garden would you move your garden or destroy that colony/ecosystem. IMHO i think using the occational ant hill for growing medium is using a resourse that is OUT THERE rather than hauling it in. BTW i burn 20 loggers cords of wood each year to heat my home which prolly comes out to 150 trees. please try to see the big picture. now if you will excuse me i need to go out to the back 40 and saw down another 30 trees and buck em up as i ran short of firewood this winter

Tried using what I thought was a dormant anthill last grow. Ended up not being dormant :yoinks: Ants ended up eating the roots and it fell over in early Aug. Still got about 2oz off the plant. Def grew faster than the other in ground plants.

ya i found out the hard way bout them ants if ya dont neutralize the hill. i do dig down far enuf to find the eggs, then turn that area over vigorously. also, i dont grow in the same place 2 ys in a row. i have returned to a previous area after couple yrs and reused the original nuked hill. it do fill up with native plants tho' purty fast and they need to be dug out. ive also noted thet the ant hill plants have large root balls and can be hard to yank out. i wish i could figger out how to get rid of them colorful sapsucking bugs thet are all over them plants. i dont use pesticide. and i don see them on the native plants the are adjacent to the grow area. i do see tree frogs in the plants in the mornings, sitting in the crotches of stems but they only there for a couple of weeks. someone told me bout nicotine and dish soap but i would hate to fuck with them frogs.

ant hills contain a chamber of their feces and their deceased , a bathroom of sorts which is very rich in nitrogen and depending on the size of the mound that could be some great organic ferts

i did note that the larger hills seemed to work better. and the deer dont like walking thru em, allways walk around em.

Stop being selfish.
Start being a responsible MJ grower.
STOP damaging the ecosystem needlessly by destroying anthills

Just because you pollute to the extreme in other areas doesn't make it ok to damage the ecosystem. Every thing you do to the ecosystem has a chain effect of damage to the food web.

I'm so fucking sick of seeing these arrogant growers with no remorse for the damage they cause to the environment. It's bad to do, and it gives all MJ growers a BAD name.

Makes me sick, grow up please

What type of ant hill? Are they native to the area? An ecosystem can be destroyed by an invading species. Lets not prejudge.

Do you know what the word 'ecosystem' means? The simple act of digging a hole will destory 'ecosystems'

What ecosystems are you talking about destroying? A single home of the most common insect on the planet? The microfauna that exist in their 'ecosystem' in the soil?

If you are going to be this anal retentive about 'destroying ecosystems', maybe you should start attacking everyone who grows outside or heck even people who walk on the grass cuz every interaction with nature causes disruptions in many 'ecosystems'
