Deputies discover $1 million worth of marijuana in Tucson stash house
A hidden compartment stuffed with bails of marijuana hundreds of them.
A bust agents say is one of the largest drug seizures in years.
It happened Sunday morning in the 4200 block of West Valencia Road.
Deputies say they stumbled across the stash house after the smell of pot led them to a hidden room.
"One eleven, one twelve..." agents with the Counter Narcotics Alliance count the hundreds of bails of pot.
Deputy Jesus Gomez with the Pima County Sheriff's Department says, "It's a pretty big stash house."
Deputy Gomez and another deputy was patrolling the southwest side for something else, but came to this house after smelling marijuana through the building.
"You could smell it from outside, it was emanating through the walls," said Gomez.
The smell was so potent; it leads detectives into a back room. When they pulled back a wall, it revealed more than a thousand pounds of marijuana.
The counter narcotics alliance showed up, "One thirteen, one fourteen..." and counted even more bails of pot.
"It's an estimated two thousand pounds."
By bulk, they say that's about a million dollars in street value.
"Basically, Detectives followed their nose until they found the hidden compartment and once they opened the hidden compartment they found the door," says Deputy Gomez.
Authorities also found plastic packing material. They say it looks like prior to the bust, it was a very active drug operation.
The homeowner was not there when authorities showed up.
Detectives say he's facing multiple charges including possession and distribution of marijuana.
