Alternative Media

I know a lot of this stuff is Internet based now but the 'Rainbow Family' thread got me thinking: are there any radical/alternative magazines newspapers anymore? Everything seems to be centrist mainstream such as Sky News etc. All the newspapers seem to be the same. What happened to the underground? I like to read but can never find anything to read in the shops all the same crap like Time and Newsweek. I mean I picked up National Geographic a few weeks ago and the main article was ' How Cannabis gives you heart attacks etc' ?! Mad....:tiphat:
So whats your favourite alternative/underground/good read magazine?

Spot ^^^ is correct, even I go thru my dads, Freaky Brothers Comics for some relief, although their is some action in France in the comic(graphic artist) line, but very little happening like back in the 70-80s ...? anyone got links?

dont waste your money on high times, they dont give a fuck any more, the handful of articles are just more unapologetic adverts, good canna related mags are soft secrets and leaf,

High Times is to me the epitome of crap media, more ads than articles, and often I have seen advice printed in those pages ...copied direct from this and other sites (no shit)

the very next time I see this ...I'm gonna post it here on icmag..(promise)
I've seen it 2-3 times now, but comfort myself, saying that theres really only one way to grow good plants, and much of it is the same
...but really

HT had the bloody gall to refer to themselves as the National Geographic of cannabis.

Maybe in a world where the Daily Mirror passes as anything other than black-ass making asshole scraping shittickets.

Alternative media is almost worse than entertainment news. Full of the same conjecture and unverified stories that fall apart under scrutiny. The same nonsense, they just stroke your cock in a more personally pleasing way to the smurf hat and dreadlock crowd.

I find it more interesting to skim the mainstream news and look for Waldo, rather than read about why I should install an icon to Naomi Klein in the corner of my room to prostrate before. Nothing ever makes it to print without a reason and it is interesting to see which direction the cattle prod is coming from.

You know what they say about looking for "alternative" anything. If you're looking, you're probably walking in a crowd of hipsters that will mainstream it up into something trendy to hold in your other hand, 180 degrees away from a hot caffeinated beverage with more adjectives than substance. I don't think they say that at all, I think I just made that up. Like a bloody magician.

I know what you mean. 'Their selling hippie wigs in Woolworths'. Yes of course that happens. but not always. Sometimes you get genuinely radical ideas albeit speaking to a fringe audience. ie Terence McKenna , possibly Burroughs (bit of a silver spoon merchant imo). What is frightening (and im talking mostly about the UK as I dont know enough about the US literary scene) is the truly awful crap spewed out by middle class publishers publishing their 'friends'. Burroughs once said the British literary scene was incestuous and he was right. They are almost wankin each other off in Bloomsbury. The horrible middle class dullards. We need a punk revolution in ideas and writing. Bukowski would never have got published in the UK or Carver. Instead its the usual English Aristocrat/Stately home/oh gosh how we won the war (my arse) by cracking the enigma code golly gosh. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and some dull middle class English woman...

No one needs a publisher these days, with the advent of the internet and self publishing.
Hopefully this will lead to the cultural revolution that you speak of.

Although here in the UK , it seems most would rather complain about the problem rather than be part of the solution

yes you are right the Internet self publishin makes it easier to get published but the 'real' big publishers are the ones who sell books and they have the mindset im talkin about.
