I was wondering if there were any cheap, small, air-cooled reflector hoods available online that anyone knows about.

I cant see the point in trying to cool a 150 watter,my smallest fixture is 250MH and it sure doesnt need to be cooled.

if you are going to air cool a 150, ya might as well just make a cool tube and run a 250. as long as you do something to control the heat, the extra wattage will really show a difference.

Really??? No need to cool it at all? Cab size will be 1.25' x 2' x 4.5' if that changes anything.

I've never run a 150, but with a 250 it certainly helps to at least have a fan pointed at it cooling the light and removing some of the radiant heat away from the bulb.

Personally I wouldn't waste money on the DIY cooltube. Bake-a-round is $20 after shipping, Mogul socket is another $7-$10 after shipping, then reflective insert material (if you choose), end piece(s) another $5 or so, and all the sudden you have a POS, small-diameter tube for roughly the cost of an entry-level cooltube.

$10 coleman lantern globe at walmart, some of those little hose clamps that tighten with a screw ($2), $5 for a dryer hose. Turkey pan ($1 at dollar store)

So that's like $17 if I made one, not sure where you can get a $17 commercially made cool tube.

But if temps could be kept in the mid seventies in the "canopy" with no hood or cooltube with a 150 in a cab that size, that'd be the best option

I'm sure your $17 solution (don't forget the socket!) will work just fine, but it's not going to be as nice or perform as well as a "real" 6" diameter cooltube. For a 150w, though, I'm sure that's the best bet.

Keep in mind that a "real" cooltube has some extra value if you ever decide to get out of this hobby for one reason or another, since you'll be able to sell it to recoup some of the initial investments. ($59 + ship can get you the real deal.) Not to mention being able to better handle larger wattage bulbs in case you decide to upgrade in the future.

Yeah, I already got a socket. This is just for a little personal-use cab (obviously), and is 100% DIY; raw ballast kit, stanley fan, homemade cab. Haha, and I'm too broke to even afford that. But yeah, hopefully a cooltube won't even be necessary, that'd actually be a blessing

I forgot who it was, but there was another guy here who used a candle vase thing ... couldn't have cost more than a couple of dollars at the dollar store... and I think he was running 400w! Maybe you can bring the cost down to $10 or less!

well i run a 150 watts in a 21x 22x 32 cab and yes it needs to be cool dont care what any one says that lil light can heat my box to 106 with a room temp of 80 and but thats was with a 85 cmf fart fan running when i install the 145 cmf dayton i drop my temps down to 89 as the hottest temp with a room temp of 80 but since i dont run a cool tube as of yet i just have a lil pc fan in frount of the bulb to keep cool with out all that i would just have me a bigger verson of the easy bake oven.
