ALISO VIEJO, Calif. -- Sheriff's deputies started cutting down marijuana plants in an Aliso Viejo canyon Thursday after no one showed up to harvest the crop.
VIDEO
A sheriff's department helicopter discovered the estimated 5,000 plants two weeks ago. Investigators waited to remove the crop because they wanted to conduct surveillance to see whether anyone would harvest the plants.
No one was seen at the site during the past two weeks, so crews began cutting the plants Thursday morning. The crop has an estimated street value of $500,000, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
The growers watered the plants by tapping into the homeowners group's water supply, investigators said.
The plants probably would have been harvested in August or September, according to deputies.
Deputies divided the crop into the North and South grow because it covered a vast expanse of land.
The plants will be cut, bagged, photographed and destroyed, authorities said.
No one was arrested.
Funny to see such a HUGE bust in OC. Who ever it was someone had there stuff together.
