I pulled some duty when in the military with a fella that was exposed to lots of AO.
His problems were neurological. He had severe nervous ticks of his face, head, and upper body. The guy constantly jerked out of nowhere, an uncontrollable shake of the head, and tickish blinking all the time. He didn't talk much about it, but he told me that he was told if he retired, he would have a very hard time getting the help he needed...so he stayed in waiting for retirement and was always given some of the easiest duty there was. Actually, all the guy did was pass out leaf blowers and such on post, and was a pro cribbage and spades player.

No but I got Hep C in the Nam. Both of my sons have something macullar degeneration in one`s eyes and the oldest had one leg a little shorter than the other which got worse over time. I got rid of the HCV, luckily

I picked up Hep C in the mid 70's while down central America way, never tested positive though until 1994. Went through the interferon injections and pills and was able to get it down low enough that it is now undetectable (they tell me I still have it, it just won't show up unless they really go micro looking for it.) Glad to hear that you were able to rid yourself of yours, that shit does bad things to your liver.

Sorry guys as it has been a while since I have been online as I had to have my heart ablated and that knocked me out for a while....But AO caused my husband to get prostate Ca and cost him his life eventually... as well as many VN Vets have Type 2 diabetis from OA exposure and just wanted to let vets know they are eligible for vet benefits and compensation if they have diseases R/T AO exposure. The VA don't advertise this of course...LOL...

But my hubs was in one of the worst battles in VN [Ia Drang Valley conflict] and I guess I am going through some delayed anger at the government.
Sooo I want to help all VN vets who have PTSD...Leukemia...Type II IDDM...prostate cancer were prolly caused by AO.

But Hep C is a bummer and no vaccine for it yet. Hep B does have a vaccine though and it is more deadly than AIDS is BTW,,,

Hep C eventually causes cirrhosis of the liver...but the interferon has helped ...but is expensive..

Ya know only 30 soldiers did not get hurt or killed in the Ia Drang Valley conflict and my hubs was one of them.....that was 65 and his "survivor guilt" was so strong he went back for more in 71.....I think he should get The Purple Heart as he did die from the war eventually...

But I don't feel like fightin' the guvment' LOL...

Sooooo I am just venting my anger and sorrow at my loss STILL!!!!! Never get over your first love and father of your children.

But rest in peace Curt as we all still miss you and you were the greatest soldier...husband and father that ever was...

BUT VETS file for benefits if you are an AO victim......they WON'T TRY TO FIND YOU....

You need to shout your message as loud as you can madrecinco, cause the VA sure as hell ain't going to tell vets what they are truly entitled to. It sucks when you do what your country asks of you only to brushed aside once the mission is completed, but that's the price we pay to live in the US I suppose.

I wish you well with the Interferon; I was part of an early study group so the Interferon, Ribovarin, and treatment were free (I had numbers that they hoped would make the study look more favorable.) The weird part is I never displayed symptoms at all. I used to give blood every 6 weeks, and then one day in '94 I received a letter from the Red Cross telling my most recent sample had tested positive so they did not want any more of my blood nor could I remain an organ donor. My own doc confirmed the diagnosis and said I was most likely exposed to it down in central America during the mid 70's. No one really took it seriously until a new doc said there was no such thing as carriers of the disease, so he referred me to a gastro for treatment. Biopsy did show enlargement and early signs of cirrhosis. I have always been the ass backwards type, so while everyone else got sick the first few weeks while on the meds, I felt fine and then got sick as hell the last 2 weeks I was on the stuff. Doc was checking me daily, wanting me to get the full 6 months of treatment at least. Since then annual retests have shown me to still be at undetectable levels, so it did work for me. My thoughts go with you my friend and hope you can eventually beat this disease.

The interferon and co-drug, darn near killed me for 7 months. Got addicted to Hydrocodene while taking the drugs but I`m told that I am clean of the virus, it took 6 months but I got off the what was it hydrocodene.

Was your pain caused by the treatment meds or the disease? They told us in the study that the meds would make most people sick as a dog the first 2 weeks to a month and may cause itching and irritation at the injection site; I felt fine until the final 2 weeks and then I dropped some considerable weight due to the non-stop nausea. Doc was getting worried while I joked about how getting sick was the only way I could seem to loose weight anymore, but I managed to complete the full 6 months of treatment (2003) and my numbers have been undetectable ever since.

Sorry for the delay Gobats. I had HCV 1a, I had to do 48 weeks of Peg. and Copeg. It was definitely the drugs that made me sick. The cost of a misspent youth. Why do they let 18 yr. old`s join the army? And go to VN.

I believe I've been 0 viral load for 4 years now. I'm told that if it came back they would be very surprised. Were you given Marinal to help you eat?

No problem Hank, I seldom have multiple good days any more myself. No Marinal (but I did have some good smoke), just the interferon and ribovarin. Doc told me the same thing about recurrences, said for all practical purposes I was cured but still cannot donate blood or organs.

Even worse, why do they let those young bastards into the spec ops community and give them an opportunity to visit third world shit holes? My doc was convinced I had to have been exposed during the mid 70's down in central America; never was asymptomatic, just tested positive after giving blood one day in '94.

Yeah, I had no symptoms, I told a Doc I had had hepA in the 4th grade and B I didn't no when. A little lite went off over his head and he checked for HCV antibodies. I got real lucky with the "cure". I had type 1a so I to do 48 weeks of the interferon and ribovarin like you

I lost my FIL (God rest his soul) at 58 years of age 2 years ago, he died of small cell cancer of the lungs, but it had actually spread to his brain and various organs near the end.

My wife has had blood work done and does so every year for any potential issues now.

But most of all, we just miss him.

AO Proving Grounds - Hawaii

AO Proving Grounds - Hawaii

I have a friend who recently discovered AO was created at the University of Hawaii. It was tested on a parcel of jungle, I forget which island and name. The kicker is, when he was a Wolverine in the early 70s, infantry stationed in Hawaii, he remembers the many "nature walks" where his unit often trained, and seeing entire areas devoid of foliage.

So be aware if you were on patrols in the jungles of Hawaiia in the 60s-70s, -you may have trained in AO contamintaed jungles.

AO is a killer and what they did in Desert Storm was enen worse...Who knows WTF is goin' on currently in the M.E. to poison our soldiers...not to mention the anguish of PTSD.
Recruitment is up currently per limited jobs currently. Bless those recruits...they are in for hell. Especially those in Afghanistan...

Amen to that brotha

My uncle voluntarily did two tours in Nam...I'm not sure which company or what area he was in, but god bless his soul. His name was Rusty. According to my father, (his brother) Rusty was good at what he did He was awarded the Purple Heart and a few other medals for his services. After returning from Viet Nam, and after being spat on and hassled by ungreatful and soulless people, Rusty returned to Fresno,CA and later settled in Dinuba(sp?), CA. As time passed, and as his undoubtebly untreated PTSD got worse and worse, Rusty became an alcoholic, and eventually turned to Crystal Meth, (the devil's drug) and eventually ran out on his family. Three years ago, in 2006, Rusty suffered a massive stroke, and was put on life support and after 6 days in a vegetative state, Rusty was taken off life support.

RUSTY: Your family wants you to know that you have long been forgiven for your mistakes, and that we all love you and miss you very much. Your our hero :badday:

Much love and respect to all the Vets in America. I can't thank you enough for your services to this country.

-Peace
