After youve made seeds, how long before u cant plant them?

ive heard u have to wait a month after u harvest seeds before you can use them, ive also heard you can place them in the freezer for a day or two and that allows you to skip waiting a month for them to become viable. a grower a while back produced diseal ryder seeds and i read that he sowed them directly after and they popped for him into healthy plants, iim wondering if nature when the seeds are fully ripend on the plant and fall of are good to go and if i wait long enough before i harvest for my seeds to mature fully if my germ rates will be high upon immeidiate sowing after harvest? , id rather not buy more seeds is my goal but i cant waste a month either. any pointers fellas would be apriciated :tumbleweed:thx.

A couple of weeks ago I germinated 9 seeds that grew on a reveging plant that was pollinated by a donor in the veg room. They took about 4 weeks to mature in my estimation while in reveg. I took the seeds from their pods when some of the pods had turned brown and immediately germed them in water for 24 hours and all cracked. They are now vigorous seedlings.

are you in a rush to get these going... yes we wait 30 days to let the seeds dry properly. i have put fresh seeds in germ and got a few to pop. the germ rate is not so good at this stage this will increase by drying them for 30 days..

I feel it also depends on how long you let them ripen before harvesting them. Some people take them prematurely. I have had some that were ripe fall out of the calyx pod and start sprouting in the soil within days all around the mother plant...

I was having the same problem. I wanted to sprout a seed that I just made in a cross, but I just harvested. Would a heat gun help dry out the seeds? Dry them in the sun? Or just pop the beans as is?

I would let them dry naturally. I had the same question I asked some of the breeders here. They told me they let there stock dry for 30 days before they send it in..

Let the plant go until the calyxs go crispy/golden coloured and the seeds are falling out naturally, Or harvest when you know the majority are ripe and dry the buds with the seeds in.

Obviously if you were selling them or wanted as close to 100% germ rate as possible a month would be best.

If its just for you try them after a couple of weeks. depends how many you need to germ though, put in twice as many to be safe. :)

I just finished a full seed run. The seeds that are close to the outside of the bud fall off easy. You could probably germ these no problem. The seeds that are in the middle of the bud seem to take longer to ripen. I found most of the immature seeds in this area of the buds. If your just making some seeds for yourself I dont think more then a branch needs to be pollinated. You can leave these on even if you harvest the rest of the plant.

I have seeds growing now that just broke soil...the plant they came from gets chopped tomorrow. They were a bit slow to crack...as in 1 day longer, but they are growing fine now.

For personal use, that is how fresh a seed can be...plucked and straight to soak...lol. But seeds do germinate better if they dry a bit / sit for a week.

*edit* sorry PK - that is supposed to be a +1

Hammerhead Ive seen the same thing. Even when pollination takes place at the same time, some of the seeds finish before others. On a plant I selectively pollinated last year with two different pollens on two different branches at the same time, one cross matured faster than the other.

Dont think that cana actually requires striation to germinate like some species , but can do no harm.
If they fall out when bashed and they stand a gentle pinchtest , seem good to go whether fridged or not.

Have found that pulled immature soft pale seed at P +14 can be coaxed into life , but mature seed at +30 overtake them in veg , something can be salvaged from a dieing seeded plant if needs be.

Getting the same germination with waxing as in the fridge , on the same lot at six years storage time , and will switch to that method.

A valuable seed collection is a sitting duck sat in a fridge , for police or other scumbags , better concealed elsewhere in a way that does noy require electricity to maintain.

Tried weighing a batch once as they dried , every day till they stopped loseing weight , less than 5% over a week , but better judged by eye and squashability.

thx alot for the tips n advice guys, i just saved another hundred bucks is what i learned, i cant wait to pop my mossy jem auto ak cross, no mo 10-15 :tumbleweed: dollars a seed.
