"affordable" thermal imager

Thermal imagers are way over-priced. There is absolutely no reason for 30 year technology to cost any near as much. A camera is a camera. Anyway...
IR thermometers are just as effective, no prettied up with colors picture though...damn sight more versatile than an FLIR is too.

Or you can hit the search engines and look up 'used thermal imager' 'thermal imaging rental'.

Those 99 temp guns give you the surface temp of what you are pointing it at. I happen to own one of the ones in the link. I used to use it for MY RC cars to monitor engine temps, very popular in gas RC cars.

The FLIR or thermal imagers are much more advanced and can give you pictures behind a surface. No ways my temp gun can do that

Just a thought Yamaha, inquire at an equipment rental place and see if you can rent one or a lead on renting one. If they ask questions just tell them you are pumping insulation into your old homes wall cavities and would like to get a read for missed areas.

yeah, i have an ir thermo... i just thought this thing would make a pretty picture out of a mass of temp information...
... i'd be all stoned in the garden, with that thing on my eye, making noises like the predator...

Haha, making noises like the predator - Awesome. Exactly how I'd describe my IR thermometer.

Is this the same technology they use to bust people? Like with the helicopters or whatever?

If so, how would they see through a wall with this?

I mean for example, lets say you were on the Street looking at a House. And you pointed the infared at the house. Would it see through the walls, and see the temperature of objects inside the house? Or would it just see the temperature of the house's outside walls?

Same with a helicopter, can it see through the roof and see the temperature of objects in the house? Or can it only see the temperature of the roof?

Yes it can see through a wall. There was alot of talk about this a few weeks ago here. There was a pic posted of a garage and you could clearly see a car inside by the outline. You could also see the passenger area, muffler and engine area were warmer. All this with the garage door closed

It has been mentioned that FLIR can see inside and can clearly see your hoods, and light cooling by the heat pattern they generate. Again behind closed doors.

Now the question is how far can they penetrate? There has been talk of double walling, like building a room inside of a room and keeping the outside layer one solid temp so it would just show up as a block. There has also been talk of different insulation materials. I am curious to know in abasement with concrete foundations and dirt on the outside, am I at risk?

Helicopters use the same technology, just from above.

Luckily privacy laws prevent LEO from driving around and using it on every house in your neighborhood. Maybe they do but it cant be used to get a search warrant as its illegal until they get a warrant

Yes these CAN be rented online but not cheap. Its still several hundred dollars to rent and you have like 2 days to use and return.

Large, sharp thermal images
Thanks to the largest display (five-inch) available on this type of thermal imager in combination with low-noise VOx sensors, the Fluke IR FlexCam units produce exceptionally high-quality images making even the smallest temperature differences visible. This is comparable with images normally only obtained on far more expensive instruments.

A sharp image in every situation
The innovative 180 ° articulating lens makes it possible to view and capture images in areas with poor accessibility. The display remains clearly visible while viewing over high objects, under a machine or around immoveable obstructions. The SmartFocus wheel simplifies getting a stable and sharp image. No need to take your hand off the instrument to turn a focus ring.

Make anomalies visible
Thanks to built-in functions like AutoCapture, the IR FlexCam Thermal Imagers help to troubleshoot difficult problems. The instrument is easily set up to automatically capture only those images where a temperature limit is exceeded. This way, difficult to find intermittent problems can be captured and analyzed quicker by concentrating only on the images containing the anomalies.

Analysis and reporting comes standard
The SmartView™ software (supplied with the unit) includes a complete range of infrared image viewing, analysis, annotation and reporting tools. It even allows for customized reports to accommodate specific company work processes or requirements like multiple image reporting and comparisons. To find out more select SmartView on the side navigation of this page.
