Advice on collecting genetics

To those who have over time ammassed a collection of favored genetics for long term safe keeping.....

How do you arrange your collection into your existing grow? Just to be clear, I have a place to store 2 mothers so I can have a steady supply of clones for flowering. But given the unique conditions of my growroom I can only flower one of two differetn varieties at a time. Do you store mothers offsite or in there own room? What countermeasures do you have for a cropwide disease or something other catastrophe of that nature?

There are just so many varieties I want, and once I get them, I'd like to preserve the genetics. Even if I don't want them for my current project, I'd like to keep them around for some day when I have more room to devote to my hobby.

That's what seeds are for. I dont mean to be too flipant, but if you want genes for the future, don't plant everything you have, then when you get down to the last few magic beans, rather than taking the family cow to market again, just make some f2's or 3's etc.

I think we all would love to keep a mother of all our strains, but realisticly we can't....or most of us can't. I keep 4 mothers to pull clones from, I replace a mother when I get a strain I like better.

But yes GMT offered the best advice, run low on seeds. Make some F2's or F3's.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have always been a grower and never experimented with breeding. I don't like growing from seed as plants all from the same batch of seeds can have different genotypes.

Are you suggesting that I cull the seedlings and polinate a few of the females who exhibit the traits I like?

I suppose that would work, but to be honest, pollen makes me nervous. I know I can brush some on to a few select bud sites with relative safety. What are the chances of this pollen infecting the rest of my crop?

Any suggestions on the best method of doing this? I have zero experience in this department. I have always done a straight grow, harvest, repeat.

There are so many techniques, the easiest is to write off one grow, and just leave the boys with the girls and some air flow.

If I find a nice male and female I like, I usually polinate a few lower branches. Which will give you enough seeds to play with later. If you do go with leaving the male in and pollinating all, definately clean all equipment and the flower room before your next grow, or you might get some unwanted seeds.

Breeding is fun.

lots over in the breeders forums, but if you haven't done it before, just keep it simple.

Anyone had any experience with just pollinating a branch or budsite via brush? Also, what is optimum time to pollinate artificially? I don't want any pollen p[roducing males anywhere near my flower room.
