Advice Needed - 800 watt grow. 4x4 area. SOG, SCROG, what to do...

i have a 4' x 4' x 6'5" area with 1 400 watt cmh bulb and 1 400 watt hps bulb. i'll be switching the other hps bulb to cmh in the next week or so. i'm using the biobizz line of nutrients. i've used fluorescents once before in a grow, this is my first time using hid lighting.

i need some advice on what type of grow i should do. i vegged out 4 plants to 18-24" over the last few months. i have these plants and about 12 rooted clones between 6"-13". these are all purple erkle clones. i have healthy mothers and basically an unlimited supply of clones. should i sog, scrog, or just grow them the old fashioned way?

i was thinking of trying SOG, but i don't know how many plants i should fit in that area, what type of containers to use, etc. any advice is greatly appreciated.

If growing in soil with good headroom I'd grow larger plants or scrog them, sog is really for hydro tables IMO.I get best results in my 8 by 8 by growing very large plants.Dont forget the mycorrhizae!

To really maximize your space you should go with a SOG. Take a bunch of clones from your mother plants/veg plants if they exist yet. Get them rooted and then put them directly into flowering. With 800 watts in a 4x4 you can get some seriously fat budded stalks on those clones. Two gallon containers would be a good amount of soil for some SOG clones. One you get dialed in and depending on how many clones are flowering at once, you would be looking at a VERY healthy yield. If you can air cool those lights to get them closer you'll do even better.
Best of luck

I have a couple questions regarding SOG. So basically, I just get a clone, root it, how tall do i want it to be? do i need to veg it at all? You say 2 gallon containers would be good for some SOG clones, how many clones do you suggest I put per container? also, when I load all these containers in, do I leave any space or just jam as many in the 4x4 as possible? damn sorry for so many questions, i just want to do this RIGHT :) i appreciate the help, i really think SOG is the way to go after reading a few threads. i like the "baseball" style sticks of nug. the reason i could see to not go SOG is the # of babies you need at once. i really don't want to get into 3 digits.

thanks again!

How much you need to veg depends a lot on the strain. Some strains have a lot of stretch and don't really need more than a couple of days to adjust to the repotting before you can throw the flower switch. Others need a little more.
In your space I would probably go for 36 plants in pots - will 6 2 gallon containers fit along the side? Veg the rooted clones in cups for a week or 2 - this can easily be done in a 2X2 foot area under flourescents. Repot and give 2 days then flower. If it feels to you like the stretch is more than enough then give them less veg the next time - else you can give them more.

i don't have any 2 gallon containers on hand, but i'm sure 6 would fit. isn't 2 gallons a little big for SOG? from what i was reading, it sounds like 6" and 10" pots work really good. whenever doing the SOG method, i want to basically cram as many into the space as possible, right?

I'm wondering the same thing - i think i'm going to use 1 gallon bags and fill the 4x4 with little spacing in between. Maybe veg until the 6th or 8th node and flip.

i checked out blackone's grows that are linked in his sig. it looks like he's using 6" pots, but i'm not 100% sure.

blackone, could you let us know what type of containers you're using?

A better option than the nursery pots are the grow bags. They are more vertical than horizontal so you can really pack them in. I know they come in either 1 gal. or 2 gal. so the choice is up to you. Just remember the direct correlation between root space and yield. If your clones are rather small I'd go with the 1 gal. If they are larger or have more sativa genetics I'd go with the 2 gal.

As for vegging the plants after rooting it is your call. If you want to keep them smaller and more stalkish (is that even a word?) I'd only veg a few days then flip into flowering.

What strain(s) will you be using?

i'm going to go primarily with purple erkle. this is my first run growing this strain, i'm going to be putting in around 8 clones a week until I fill the room. i just got my hid lights and have a couple of tall plants i'm going to flower as well. i've got a small table in there that i'll put the clones on to keep the canopy even. i have 8 erkle clones that i'll be transplanting as soon as i can figure out which container to use :) these 8 clones are between 10-12 inches and are currently in 16 oz party cups.

for the next run, i'm going to run the erkle again as long as she does well this time and i just picked up some mendocino madness, bubbleberry, and amnesia haze clones that will be turned into mother plants. next week, i'm getting some space queen and green crack clones that will be turned into mothers. oh yeah, almost forgot i got two og kush f2 seedlings which 1 will become a mother as well. i just want to put these damn things into their containers and switch to 12/12!! :muahaha:

thanks for the help by the way guys!!

i'm thinking of using the 1 gallon bags, unless you think i'd be better off with the 1/2ers.

Sure thing.
I'm using 20cm (about 8 inches) pots that hold 6.5 liters (1.7 gallons). The 15 cm (6") pots I know of hold about 1 gal, and are only suitable for pretty small clones - a true SOG, and you would be watering probably every day but you'll be able to fit MANY plants in a 4X4 space (Theoretically 64 but it might be hard to fit them exactly unless the space is slightly larger than 4X4)
