Advice about a small place... starting over again.

Greetings all!

I have a quick question for you folks.

I have a space that is 4' deep, 8' wide and 8' high. I'm looking to use DWC buckets to get things cooking. I also have 2 1000w ballasts. I'd like to use those both in the space. I have the air situation under control, big inline fan and CO2. But the question I'd like some advice on is...

How many buckets should I use, and how should I place the lights inside?

By placement of the lights I mean, should I use hoods or let the bulbs dangle vertically? And also where would be an optimal place to put each bulb inside that space?

I'd appreciate any advice any of you folks can offer. I promise when I get things cookin' I'll start a thread that's droolworthy.

as fuckin many as will fit in that space w/ 2 k of light your gonna get good penetration
into the canopy your only limmiting factor i can see besides space is how u access the space it self, u must leave enought space to access your plants.
and like skeletor sez try postin the hydro forum and some guru there will hook u up!!

Well it doesn't really matter if its a dwc bucket or a cinder block, I'm just thinking in respect to the size of the medium and the expansion (bush-factor) on the plants. What would be a good number of blocks to place in there.

I had thought 8 but that basically leaves a 2'x2' area around each plant and I wasn't sure if that would be good enough.

I would say around 10-15 with that much light and room. Maybe three rows of 4 or 5 buckets. I would definatly hang them horizontally with the hoods in a straight line and the fan after that. Look forward to seeing your set-up.
Be careful.

Glad you started this thread  I'm in a similar situation....new to DWC (and growing) and been wondering the same thing

I am leaning towards hanging my lights (1K's) vertically....8 buckets....looks like I'll do 2 1K's and a 400 in the middle

Someone advised me to veg a long time if I only do 8 buckets...I'm doing 4 buckets per light....in a 6 x 11

IMO...2 x 2 is enough space to grow some fat DWC nugs :2cents:

I'll look for your thread over in that hydro section someone mentioned....

Lord B I think I could only squeeze four wide in there since the buckets are more than 1'x1' themselves. That would be insane though... go down to the basement and break the seal only to receive the hundred limb slap... heheh.

Thanks for the reply -VT- - that's what I was thinking with respect to going bare with the bulbs. The upside to hanging them vertically is that you're not wasting any light like you are when a bulb in placed in a reflector and under a piece of tempered glass. You're getting the full 360 degrees of lumen... 'ness... 'nosity :).

But at the same time temperature control becomes an issue... with an enclosed reflector one can run hvac tubing through both reflectors and keep the temperature down. Otherwise you have two hot bulbs hanging fast and loose.

I'm torn between running 4 buckets... where each girl would have 4'x4' to roam... or eight... which would leave the 2'x2' area. Six would work too, in some sort of skewed layout. I have to think about the number of plants especially if I let the bulbs hang fast and loose... with some circulating air in there, a bulb could get rocking and get too close to a girl.
