I do not know the answer to your question. I do know that the stuff in the fish section at wallyworld works just fine, comes in 1 liter plastic jars.

Brick and mortar stores will charge $5 a lb and up. Ebay sells it for $2 and less.

I'm doing one of the carbon scrubber diy's,

I've procrastinated this and lurked for as long as i could but finally signed up - I must know the difference between activated carbon for aquariums (water filtering) and for odor removal (air).

I asked an ebay seller why their aquarium activated carbon was any different from the odor kind of other sellers and they simply said

"The carbon for air filter requests more process step from the factory."

This could just be someone who doesn't know what their talking about - or he could know EXACTLY what he's talking about....

Help , I don't want to get ripped off buying the not-aquarium kind for my air filter.

-Sol

I bet their "carbon for air fileter" was more expensive?

nope thats what got me... this seller didn't sell carbon for odor, just aquarium. so they must have known they were giving me info that would ...not benefit them at all? idk

Search Ebay for activated carbon. Granules are better if you can find them (greater surface area) but the pellets will do.

How can you be missing them? There's more than a dozen on the first page. Type activated carbon in the search window, hit enter and voìla!

This is a common area of confusion. Here's the scoop:

Not all carbon is created equal. Wood carbon (charcoal)is the worst. Coal carbon is "OK" and very common on Ebay. Best is coconut carbon. It's what Dr Shoals uses and he got the idea from NASA

Next, not all carbon sizes are created equal. There is the very common particle size for water filtration. Very fine and NOT ideal for vapor adsorption. Much better is to get the right size. We’re looking for 4x8 vapor phase Coconut.

Carbon Activated Corp sells 55 lbs, 2 cu. Ft. for $95 + $45 for UPS. That's a lot, but the best price that I've found for the best carbon available.

Its the microporosity and super high surface area on the carbon that allows it to scrub the air clean. There is a difference between water and air filters grade of Activated Carbon. Having said that I've been using water filter grade AC with great success. Just make sure you pack it very well, this will stop the air from passing without being scrubbed.

Hi,
I made my own filter, n I went to the local aquarium shop and got the carbon from them n it works fine. In fact it works very well. :)

Most people wind up using carbon for water filtration, and that's fine. It's the wrong size and generally coal based. Using the correct size and type is much more efficient.
