activated carbon/ac filter combos, are they any good?

I'm talking about those filters for your furnace/ac that have are infused with activated carbon in the fibers. Here's a link to what I'm talking about: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs...3&productId=100011568&N=10000003+90401+525293

I need to build a carbon filter on the cheap, like this one. But I really need this to eliminate the stench! I'm growing Chem Haze Sour Diesel from rez, and although they've been only vegging for 3 weeks, they're already stinkier than my last crop at full bloom! Also, the neighbor in the apartment below me will be able to smell my exhaust.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Do they work? Is there one brand that is better than the rest? Thanks for any help!

As long as you can get the barrel wrapped evenly. Any inconsistencies in the wrap could lead to a disproportionate amount of airflow passing through and inefficiency in carbon effectiveness.

Wont cut it bro you should check pet store for some carbon and throw a scrubber together .I understand funds are tight but that filter fabric you wanna use makes a good prefilter .That dank smell is only gonna get worse .

Ya man you can't skimp on odor control if your neighbor can smell your exhaust and doesn't smoke. I just found a activated carbon supplier where you can get 55lb bags. They have different kinds and sizes. It's activatedcarbon.com they dont have prices up on the site but I'm sure it's cheaper than the pet store.

Just a stoned thought. What if you built a DIY scrubber and wrapped this on the outside as a dust filter or "pre-filter". I 'm talking for micro grows of course as i don't see it having much benefit on a big filter.

Ok, thanks for the help. The reason I'm asking if these things are OK for scrubbing is because I just wasn't sure if they'd cut it. I had plans to basically make a sock that I would tape to the end of the duct. Although the dope I'm growing is known as the stinkies weed known to man, it's not a very large grow, like 5-10 plants...

I'm still hoping that someone who has used a product like this can shed some light.

I did try it.I used the stuff from home depot for a clone cab with a buncha stinky rooted clones. It didnt work that well. Not nearly good enough for my liking .It would be better than nothing.
Best of luck .If yer neighbor can smell it what will keep him from telling everyone who comes over the guy upstairs is growwing the funk ?

Yeah I took a look at the product I posted earlier, and wow...that wouldn't work at all.

The mesh pencil holder type scrubber works good for a 150hps grow. If your fan has a 4" flange, you can get everything you need at Wal-Mart for less than $15.00. I packed 6 ounces of carbon in it. Even if you have a 5" flange you could get a 4 x 5 reducer and the scrubber would work fine.

If you go to the trouble of making a pro scrubber you need to make the barrel length in proportion to the diameter. There's a diy here that calculates the barrel length. If I can find it I'll post it here.

i been batteling odor on a budget also. i have that pet odor carbon sheet carbon scrubbing a pc veg machine i built. i also use it in all the house vents because i smoke indoors. for my lil cab i use the panasonic wisperfan/scrubber. odors been winning. But today i got 2 vaportronic wall units. winner. i tested after i trimmed a plant that had been hanging inside my cab for 4 days. even smoking a bong all i smell now is the vaportronic. i heard some people using just the disks, would be a great idea around cut/trim time at 2$a peice. i've been through the glade plug ins, sprays, all that but this vapor thing is hands down better. i will continue to use the pet odor sheets from depot there cheep and work ok as part of a malodor free regimin.

But I really need this to eliminate the stench!

Because you used the word stench, I would say no. I'm using that exact filter material in a virtually identical filter assembly but, I'm growing singles, my Destroyer wasn't that smelly and even it started to smell slightly at the end. (And, yes, i used the carbon. It's under the green.)
