AC units and controlling temp set point...are digitals useless?

I've heard that digital controlled air conditioners lose their temp set point with power loss. First this seems insane as it could be rectified by the manufacturer with a cheap flash chip/memory of some type. I'm more interested in closed systems and require the ability to have different set points for lights off and on cycles. Analog (dial) ac's are easy to control with external line voltage programmable stats. Higher end ac's are programmable it seems.

My buddies digital dehumidifier remembers it's humidity set point so that runs on a simple timer system...cutting power is no problemo.

Soooooo...what's the dealio on digital ac's losing their temp set point with power loss???

Any hep is greatly appreciato....

Not sure if it's all models, but my Whirlpools keep thier settings (18Kbtu)...
Yeah Sandman...I find it hard to believe but know peeps with digital controlled ac's that don't remember diddly when power goes off. That seems useless in my book. I'm gonna look into this further but your ac is higher powered soooo wondering if it's the cheapie, smaller btu units???

Thanx for the reply!

Unless you have easy access to your AC your best bet is a digital with remote,my AC is on the far wall when I open the door, eight ft away and I'd have to remove a whole lotta jungle to get to it.With the remote I just just open the door and fire away when I want to adjust temps,I'm not sure I think it has to be reset if power goes out,I know my dehumid does

Thanx y'all. It seems like some digitally controlled equipment, both ac's and dehumidifiers, will lose their setpoint on power loss. Indica Sativa, thanx for that link - I have looked at external thermostats and think they will work great in some applications. I like exact control of my enviro and am going with a closed system soon. For me I will need a programmable ac of some type, whether off the shelf or by controlling with an external stat.

I too use a whirlpool 10,000 btu I believe with teh power saver feature and bla bla bla. The thing that sold me on whirlpool was it had an auto restart feature which is what your looking for in the new digital age. Many digital ac's don't restart after a power failure. Around here, during the hot summers we have a lot of power blinks I call them. When the lights go out for oh say about 5 seconds then come back on. All sumer my ac restarted after each blink. Look for this feature or get an older style with rotary knobs that is turned off or on. A window unit unless the fan is left to run nonstop will read a temp somewhere between inside and out. As temps drop outside all the metal tends to conduct the cold from outside right to the thermostat giving a false reading that it is cooler inside than it really is. I have started leaving my fan on nonstop during the winter so it keeps the air stirred up and reads a some what true indoor temp. Hope something helps you out here.

And it does hold the temp set point along with the auto restart.

Awesome...that does help. I figured with an old analog stype I could set it coooold and control the operation with an external programmable digital thermostat. Autostart...forgot about that. I guess with one like yours I could also control with a programmable external thermostat. I'd be turning it off and on alot but seems like it might work. I'll see how durable that part of the circuitry is but I'm guessing it'll be fine. My buddy has had a digital dehumidifier on a timer all Winter and no problems so far. I'm gonna do more research into programmable off the shelf units but at least have something to work with now. Thanx for the input.
