AC Service question

My house AC is not working, so I need to get it serviced, never had this done before. My question is - will they need to come in the house? The unit is outside, and if they can do all the work out there, I will be OK. I need to plan ahead if they will have to come in. Thanks for any experienced input.

they shouldnt need to come in but be prepared in case! Watch so when they are done you can go out and talk to them, before they want to come in and talk to you.
They might want to see if the air is blowing cold enough only reason for them to come inside.

hey haps, if only the compressor is down, they will probably just need to re-charge it outside...

but he might need to come inside to mess with the thermostat...

i dont understand why he would need to go mess with anything else

And they might need to get to the furnace Too.

Is it blowing air, just not cold ?

they may want to check the a-coil inside the unit. but most a/c work is done outside. they a-unit may be frozen solid.

When I moved in to my house last year the ac wasn't working so I call a tech. He looked at the air handler (inside unit) and the outside unit.
I worry about your same scenario now...

Two other things you can check first.(To answer your ??)

Turn on AC like normal go out side and see if the fan in the ac IS turning?

Then go to your inside unit and see if you can hear a blower running?

They will come in if they don't find a blown starting capacitor or low on freon. There are some things that they will want to inspect on the inside unit, thermostat, condenser, condensation cutoff switch just to name a few.

I'm not an HVAC technician, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn last night :D

If its a self contained unit meaning not a split system where the coils and fan are inside then all work besides actually checking how cold the air is comeing out of your ducts before and after rechargeing. Keep grow area locked anyways. They allways check temps of air at the ducts if they know what they are doing. Also thet might have to check thermostat which is inside , just all depends on whats wrong. Everytime i had ac work done they did a very good job and checked everything before leaving to insure it was operating at optimal.

The unit does blow, so the fan part is working fine, it is just blowing warm air. I suppose I will take a day and clean up the area he might have to see, I live like a bear in a cave. I am pretty sure it needs a recharge, it has been getting worse all summer. Thanks folks.

i would count on it. better to be prepared than to not be. then again if he is "down" then send him here. he will be a lot of people's best friend. lol. also not to worry you.. same thing happened to my buddy and he had to buy an entire new unit. on the flip side his electric bill dropped like 40%

In Canada it's against the law to recharge an AC unless the leak is found and repaired. I normally charge $500-$800 to find and repair a leak, unless its the condensor in which case its cheaper to replace entire unit. If I'm replacing an existing AC, my price starts at about $2200 for a 1.5 ton. But if your present unit is older than about 8 yrs. you can save 30-40% on your hydro with a new one.

Just had my whole central A/C unit replaced, inside and out.

New unit (fan motor and compressor) outside and a new unit with blower in the attic....you should have seen the unit they pulled out of the attic....quote from one of the A/C repair dudes...."at one time or another it was metal, now it looks like soggy cardboard".

I'd start planning ahead...you should always plan ahead no matter what, even if no one is coming over,THIS WAY YOU HAVE YOUYR ASS COVERED IN THE EVENT SOMEONE DOES DROP BY.

I am a hermit, no one ever drops by, hehe. Waiting around for an uncertified handyman to show up and do a recharge, pretty sure that is the main issue. All this guy cares about is the cash. The AC has been getting worse for over two years, that is why I think it needs freon. Thanks for the help folks.
