a retarded box building question

i ripped a sheet of plywood into 4'x2' sections

i would like to build a box 2' tall x 4' long and just cap the ends, with one side being a long door

have some new shoplites that i would like to use

well, after measuring light, duh, the bulbs are 4', the reflectors measure 4'-1"

any nice ideas, other than using a board stretcher, to making them fit?

planning on framing them with 1x2"s, with them being on the outside

obviously, this might be an easy question, but the bubble has my mind in a spin

ROFL...a board stretcher :biglaugh: I did the same thing on a shelf I built one time, so I know your frustrations. Without changing out to 36" bulbs or U bend bulbs, about all you can do is make an addon section (go ahead and make it 6") and attach it to one end...either that or cut holes in one of the ends for the fluoros to protrude through.

I'd go with the board stretcher myself
It reminds of a time we had a new guy at work, young guy, we sent him out to the shed to get the board stretcher. He was gone for about 30 minutes, came back real frustrated because he didn't want to disappoint anyone on his first day. The crew got a good laugh as did the new guy when it was all over.
Just build your framing to fit your needs and add a patch of plywood to cover the excess. If you turn your framing the right way, you may get the length and the plywood would cover the framing it just wouldn't go all the way to the ends. Split the differece on the plywood. Ah those simple mistakes are a bitch, not costly just a pain in the ars. Other option, go with 3' lights or like suggested, let the light hang out the end but then you got big light leaks.

Just use 2x4's to build the frame and turn them longways on your vetical corners or put them like an "L" shape with the overlap 2x4 on the short sides to make up those extra few inches. It wont be the purttiest box on the block but oh well...

i used 1x2"s for the framing, got some of it together last night, will take some pics today, get some more suggestions, easier once i'm able to look at it. went ahead and made a perfect box with an end on it. will figure out how to add some on without making it look like shit.

i am only using 2 - 4 foot shoplites in the cab for vegging. will one outtake cpu fan on top be able to ventilate enough? intake hole on bottom?

after messing around some more, i've gotten this far. i just framed some 1x2's around one end, therefore adding the extra needed inch. filled with crack filler. i don't like the door, to constricting, going to flip it around so it opens to the bottom. want to put everything on switches. eventually add another shoplite and another intake fan. going to stain the outside a brown, to make it look 1/2 way better.

Can you hang the door so that it will flip open and lay on top of the cabinet? Is this just for seedlings/cuttings or are you doing the bonsai grow? It looks like your cabinet turned out alright. Maybe a thermometer to test the temps before adding any thing to it would be in order now?

you could hang your lights at a slight angle, one side an inch or two lower than the other side.

things came together pretty good. the boxes get easier the more you do. always something else you could do to it....lol.

here's the end cap, just used the 1x2's, and framed around the end

i used this elec. conduit holder to hang my lights off of. that's one thing that i hate, being stuck to one spot with just a hook to hold them. now i can slide my lights to either side if i want, or add another light too. ran an extension cord through the endcap.

i switched the door around, so i just lays down, much easier, very sturdy. going to stain the outside of box for the helluva it. g/f's suggestion...

lights on. still need to get an intake fan on the opposite end cap (the right side of pic) or maybe raise up the box with 2x2's and put it in the floor. ordering one from newegg today. need to get hardware on door also. then i call it a wrap. got a digi therm. in there overnight and see what it says. being out in garage right now doesn't tell me much though.

looks like it could use one more coat of paint later on...
