A question of rep.

Hello,

Found myself recently wondering about this:

Why is it that I can add to a user’s rep, and then vote their post helpful. But I can’t vote their post helpful, and then add to their rep?

Why does it tell me that I can’t add rep to a post twice... when in reality I can't add rep in any way shape or form?

Double dipping, you might say...either hit "Post helpful" or use the middle icon on the left to enter comment. You have to spread the love in order to do the latter option.

That’s what’s odd though. The sequence seems to matter. If I enter a comment first, I can then also vote the post helpful. If I vote helpful first, I can’t then enter a comment. The former order allows for double dipping.

...

See how I did that? I commented on your post and voted it helpful... does it show up as two entries on your rep page? Or does just the comment show up?

I should mention when you do that the rep comment will show up on the rep page but the helpful wont. The helpful will show up on the post it self though for everyone else to see. It still allows you to make sure the poster gets both.

Thanks guys.

Fire, do you know if that means double points when doubling down on a post? I can't give points, but some day I'll be able to. Just wondering if in the future commenting and voting helpful will give double points...

It doesnt really work that way. Each rep comment is assigned a different amount of rep points based on the person giving it rep.

If a new poster leaves you a rep it might be one point, if a senior member with a ton of rep themselves leaves you a rep comment it might count for 25 points.

Helpfuls are probably all worth 1 point.

On you rep page it has a total of all your rep points, watch when you get an actual rep comment it will show you how much that poster contributes with a rep comment.

This is how some people can build rep very fast, they're getting a lot of reps from senior members.
