A few Notes on Cloning and Fabric Pots

I didn't really know where to post this so I wound up posting here. I'm just throwing out a few observations I have made over the past year about cloning and the newer fabric pots.

I'll start with cloning. I recently made of batch of clones and the reason I am writing about this is because my conditions for rooting were not ideal but yet I had close to a 100% success rate. I have a few mother plants in a vinyl shed and when they were getting tall I decided to use the cuttings for clones just for shits and giggles. The shed gets full sun from about 12 until about 5 and here in the summer it's not uncommon for my shed to get up to 100+ degrees. So I made my clones and soaked them in Olivia's solution overnight as I usually do. I Use Clonex rooting gel and I Use Rapid Rooters. Normally I use a humidity dome but because of High temps I knew this would not be good so I went with out the dome and because of the temps I did not need to use a heat mat. Thankfully I hit a lil stretch of weather where it was not so hot, only about 80 - 85. I misted them a couple of times a day for the first several days and the few days it did get hot I brought the clones outdoors and kept them out of direct sun. Sure enough, right at about 10 days many of them had roots and after 14 days all but 2 had roots and even they appeared to have root nubs. I like many others here have used many different methods of cloning and like many here I feel that Rapid Rooters are the BEST. One important note is not to push the cutting down too far into the Rapid Rooter, you don't want the bottom of the cutting to be in the water/solution. All too often I think beginners make cloning out to be more difficult then it really is.

I have recently started using Fabric Pots. At first I was skeptical of how well they would work in terms of moving them around and also for Re-use but after a few grows and seeing the results I must say that these pots are EXCELLENT. I just recently up-potted and like advertised the root zone is so much better. The root ball was extremely tight but yet they did not have that mass of woven roots that can and do become harmful to the plant. The Fabric pots were easy to remove and I did not have to do much at all for re-use. These pots are also great for outdoor grows where as they won't fall over when you have larger plants and it gets windy unlike standard plastic pots that typically do tend to fall over. These pots are slightly expensive and don't last forever but seeing the benefits of a healthy root zone I think they are well worth it, especially for Mother plants.

I hope every one has a wonderful grow season

I have another observation about cloning. Once again my Mother plants were in need of pruning so I decided to use the cuttings for an experiment. I have rooted many other types of plants by placing the cuttings in a cup of water and so I thought I would try this with my Marijuana cuttings. At first it seemed like it would work as I had root nubs at about day 12 but after another 14 days only one cutting had just two very short roots. so this method of rooting is NG.

A few years ago I did a thread challenging the notion that 80 degrees or more was too hot for clones.....

I found after much experimentation that the best temps were from 80 to 85 degrees....

If you get that right....with clonex you can scrap the olivias and the rapid rooters....

not required for high rates of success....

About once every year or two I buy a bag of fine vermiculite at lowes...

Truely a perfect medium for rooting a cutting.....

Here is the link...... try to bottom heat at 82 or 83 degrees...and you will be a master cloner....
