Ok, so I have been a regular smoker since the early 80s. I like to think I am pretty familiar with all the intricacies involved in smoking this magnificent plant. I also liked to think I was up to speed on the various details of the sub-culture of pot smokers.
Granted my memory is a little flimsy at times (gee, I wonder why?!?) but I do not recall this term '420' being used until about 10-12 years ago.
One day, I decided to ask my daughter about the term. I had already looked up the term so I knew what it meant, but according to my daughter (who is 20) the term has been around for alot longer than my memory. She said it had something to do with a bunch of kids that decided to skip school on 4/20 and smoke out. Now I remember back in the 80s we used to have a day in school called 'Senior skip day'. This was the day of the school year where all the seniors in high school would skip school. It had nothing to do with smoking pot. It was just a sort of non-sanctioned school activity. The faculty looked the other way and no one ever got in trouble for skipping class on this day. The only correlation I can make between the two was that senior skip day was near the end of the school year (probably in April or May).
My first guess is that since I live in the mid-west it was just an instance of it taking longer to work it's way into middle America.
Anyhow, my question is to the older smokers. Are you familiar with the usage of this term prior to the early to mid 90s? and if so, when did you first hear the term '420'?
