420?

Ok, so I have been a regular smoker since the early 80s. I like to think I am pretty familiar with all the intricacies involved in smoking this magnificent plant. I also liked to think I was up to speed on the various details of the sub-culture of pot smokers.

Granted my memory is a little flimsy at times (gee, I wonder why?!?) but I do not recall this term '420' being used until about 10-12 years ago.

One day, I decided to ask my daughter about the term. I had already looked up the term so I knew what it meant, but according to my daughter (who is 20) the term has been around for alot longer than my memory. She said it had something to do with a bunch of kids that decided to skip school on 4/20 and smoke out. Now I remember back in the 80s we used to have a day in school called 'Senior skip day'. This was the day of the school year where all the seniors in high school would skip school. It had nothing to do with smoking pot. It was just a sort of non-sanctioned school activity. The faculty looked the other way and no one ever got in trouble for skipping class on this day. The only correlation I can make between the two was that senior skip day was near the end of the school year (probably in April or May).

My first guess is that since I live in the mid-west it was just an instance of it taking longer to work it's way into middle America.

Anyhow, my question is to the older smokers. Are you familiar with the usage of this term prior to the early to mid 90s? and if so, when did you first hear the term '420'?

I always heard the story was kids form Berkley (maybe, memory's fuzzy) would meet everyday after school at 4:20 to smoke.

the concept of "420" is more new than old. ive known old school smokers who have no idea what it is.

When I graduated highschool we also had a senior skip day and it had nothing to do with smoking. It was an added perk, but it was more to signify that we were graduating. The last few years i know 420 has fallen on or around Earth Day. So I just figured it had something to do with that.

I wanna say that it was san rafael HS in the 70's. The group that came up with the idea were known as the Waldos. They would meet after school by a statue of Louis Pasteur, if I am not mistaken, at 4:20. The concept grew, and began to be featured in Greatful Dead tour posters.

this is what I've heard.......

it was a group of high school kids, one had stumbled upon a small grow patch in some nearby woods. it was @ 4:20pm after school that they were to meet and go to the grow to rip it off. 420 became their code word for weed....... and it grew from there.

the most popular 'urban legend' of the 420 was that it was police code for marijuana being smoked, but with over 800,000 of us U.S. stoners being busted annually it didn't take long to expose that as fiction.......

i may be wrong because i havent done much outside growing but i believe the term 420 refers to the 4th month 20th day, April 20th which is the optimal time to plant your marijuana seeds.

You plant in April down in Fla you'd better have an irrigation system system or a strong back, rainy season doesnt start here till June.I think the idea was born from marketing executives on Wall Street.Lots of 420 products out there these days.

This is also what I heard as the "true" story. But I've been toking close to 40 years and it seems that only in the last few has the term become mainstream in the pot culture.

Wow. So, I would like to say that I am incredibly impressed with myself. I just went through my stack of HighTimes and found the article discussing the origins of 420.

I was absolutely correct, just like TwoOhSix said. What I can't believe is that I remembered the right HS and the right statue. The year was 1971. What I can believe even less is my ability to remember stuff like this, and lines to a bajillion movies, but I cant remember the shit that I need to, for the life of me. Absurd.

So yeah, read my first post, and there is your answer. No grow rips, no 'police code for toking in progress', no 420 chemicals in weed, none of that bullspit. It was someone's stoner dad.

Much thanks for the info. I am always wondering about useless little information like this. I am sure it is related to getting high. :)
