400watt overheating mad!

K recently just purchased easycool6 400watt hps digital system. So got it set up last night in the cab and ran it, now keep in mind flanges were bare and the wires were just ran and it was hung. I figured my primary exhaust fan would be enough, 25 dollar Radio Shack computer fan (like triple the size of the normal baby 12 volt fans). So I had it running for a total of 1 hour, I noticed a steady increase in temp, so I said ok I need to air cool this. It raised up to like 86 degrees from 60 in 1 hour... So today I got the weird drill bits for a power drill that drill the holes. got the biggest my friend had was a 4 1/2 inch hole maker thing. So did that went and bought the 25ft of 6in./dia Duct for 20 bucks. Ran the end of my one flange straight to my exhaust fan, and another one going out the hole I made. Had to use a hose clamp to fit the 6inch dia to the 4inch dia of duct i had. So I turn on the light a little while ago,,, Now keep in mind since I took my primary (only) exhaust fan to air cool the 400watt hps I know heat will of course increase due to the fact that the actual grow area didn't have an exhaust fan any more. But what was strange was in 20 minutes it was up to 85 degrees, ambient is still 69... Is that suppose to happen?.. My cab I think is 72hx28wx18d Got it at Home Depot.

My questions are this main concern, money budget.. after the cab this system and what not I am out alot of money and have wasted atleast 100dollars on stuff I didn't need doing stuff the Ghetto Way, until an upgrade but once I upgraded didnt have use for the other stuff. no more room.

Should I go back to radio shack and get another one of the fans I had previously and mount it below the other one and use that as the exhaust for the actual flower area (grow area). Or should I go for that panasonic fan, the new squirrel cage fan everyone is raving about. I'd much rather spend the 25 instead of another 100. Been trying to save up for another car, but this infatuation on getting things to atleast go moderate with me well its starting to get irritating.

Good news:

Felt my ghetto hook up of the aircooling process and noticed a considerable amount of heat being extracted from the cased reflector. So I kinda feel proud of my self on that one. But hey ya never know, could be a 1/5 of what it needs to be. Also I think I have read every DIY on this site. Alot of them help but there are still those questions, ya know.

:badday: :badday: so help with my Q would be greatly appreciated

a 400hps in a cab will need a REAL fan. A squirrel cage fan is your best bet. You might be able to get the yellow squirrel cage fan from walmart for $40 and add some ducting but it will require some crafty skills to rig up. A dayton fan will cost you 70-100$$

A computer type axial is fine for a 150 lamp but nothing much bigger. I went inline for my new 250. Stealthwise, a HUGE mistake! If you're on a budget, check out the Stanley Blower. Many people love them.

Yup, you need a "real" fan. Anything that looks like a normal computer or desktop fan(even if its high powered) will do squat in a growroom. Cheap options include the Stanley Blower or the mentioned walmart blower. Personally i use the stanley to great effect.

Heres a pic of the inside of my 6" Elicent fan to show you what a "real" fan blade might look like.

get a vortex fan, best purchse you will ever make.

ive had a dayton 256 squirel cage fan. while it was nice, it was semi-loud and no where near as powerful as the 6" Vortex I bought. The vortex last years, is more silent than the dayton, and can cool a 400 no problem. You can probably even upgrade to a 600 and cool both later on.

I have a 4" Elicent. Much quiter than the 6" Vortex. Attached to a speed controller, muffler and isolated in a cooler, it still destroys any sense of stealth I once had. I can allow people in my driveway, 20 feet away from the cab but, I can't allow them in the garage because there's nothing to take the rap for the noise.

If you can place the inline in the attic or behind locked doors, noise levels can be controlled. If you let people into the room with the fan, you'll need several large aquariums or racks of computer servers to take the blame. That or tell visitors what you're growing.

thank u guys, thanks for the pic hurricane. Ok now if i go get this fan, what is the most important part. For it to be at the end of the reflector sucking out the hot air, or for it to be at the front of the reflector pushing in the cool air?

I do agree with you guys about a Strong fan.

BUT

It also can be done if your convection is working right too.

I have seen a 1000w stuck in a closet using 1 - 6 inch inline (only 120cfm)
and a 4 INCH 90 CFM INLET.

temps were 80-86

Good air movement is essential when really good convection cannot be achieved.

Good fans are usually much better at sucking than blowing air. Also remember when you install it to leave 2x the intake size(so 1' on a 6" fan) of straight duct(can use your insulated stuff, just dont bend it too early) on either side of the fan. So best bet would be a few feet from the reflector, sucking the air out of it through some of that insulated duct you have. This isn't extremely important, but i understand any hvac expert setting up in an exaust fan in a house would leave the 2x intake size as straight tubing, putting bends in the tubing(i read somewhere a 90 degree bend is worth 15' of straight solid tube) right next to the fan will decrease the ammount of air it moves.

If your looking for stealth, be careful with the Stanley's...Mine's noisy as hell with a 4" duct...Might have to step up to a 6" and see if that helps

Its is still noisy, even at its lowest speed setting. For the winter i'm running my stanley on low exausting, and 2 desktop fans mixing. There is no doubt that the black tent in my room is making noise. To be fair though, the elicent even on solid state speed control makes more noise. If you want stealth the whisperline fans from panasonic work well. Also some fans(email manufacturer) can be used with a variac as speed control to bring the speed down without any extra noises. Solid state speed controls also work but you fan motor will make more noise.

i was able to get a stanley blower from Ace Hardware in the off season. Ordered it at the counter and picked it up the following week.
