400w SOG question

Hey!
I will soon be starting a SOG in Dr60 (2x2x5.3) with 400w hps and I'm confused with what size pot to use.Going to try Critical mass, blue dream and maybe another high yielding strain and pick the best mom. Will experiment with 0 or 1 week of veg (whichever will give best results)
I can:
Have 16 plants in 0.9 gal, 5.9 x 5.9 x 7.8
or 25 plants in 0.63 gal, 4.7 x 4.7 x 7.8

Are there any SOG growers that could advise me what size to use? Will the plants even fill 0.9 gal pots with 0 veg.

Thank you!

Sat dom plants have filled a 2 gal grow bag under a 400 with no veg. Unless your growing a very indica dom low yielder I'd go with as much soil as I could fit. Lower yielder probably more plants smaller pots.

SOG and lollipop are different techniques.

SOG = clones that have just begun to root, then placed immediately into flower. Best done with 12wk sativa dom hybrids, that will still give you a good amount of stretch, which allows for more budsites to develop. These clones are placed at a rate of 4 plants per square foot. This requires the use of 6" square pots, that are roughly 1/2 gallon. Also, this works best when plants are fed nutrients automatically on drippers, otherwise it is impossible to really reach them to water. Trying other ways, will result in the plants running out of food before they finish and a less than desired outcome.

Lollipop - Yes, you do a bit of training and trimming of the lower branches. This is also known as single cola style. The idea here, is keep only the part of the plant that is going to form a tight / full cola. Depending on strain, how much of the lower branches you remove will vary. You can grow any size plant, in any size container single cola - lollipop is a pruning technique that in theory allows the plant to focus it's energy on the top of the plant versus spreading it over an entire bush. I like 1-2g containers for such a method spread out about 1 plant per sq ft, sometimes 2 plants per sq ft if in 1 gallon.

I hope this helps you out...

I just am about to harvest my test room which is a 3wide 6long and 5.5high .. with a 400w on a light rail 3.5 only using 1 3 foot rail.. the light moves about 32 inches back n forth.. some strains look great. some are looking very weak.. everything is strain dependent.. have done SOGS in 1/2 gallon bags . all the way to 5 gallon bags.. and honestly..

if u go from rooted clone to small cups like 8 ozs to 1/2 gallon pots after 7-14 days after transplanting them into the 1/2 gallon pots.. and squeeze as many as u can in there.. and do not trim ur plants until the stretch is over.. so u can yield as much as possible.. ull be a happy man .. im thinking I mite hit around 350-400 grams on this 400w hps.

Thank you very much for your anwsers! I'm going with 25 pots with 1 week veg as this will give me option to yield the most.
Since I got my own thread here I would like to ask some more questions about SOG.

Prunning: Should I just remove the bigger fan leaves and how many budsites should I clip off.Just the lower ones or all the way to the top?

Fertilizing: soursmoker gave some great info there. I will have drippers but should the fertilizer be in the container all the time or every other week?

Will Hesi Bloom complex and Hesi Phosphorus plus be good?
On their site it says Bloom complex 1-7(week in flower) and Phosphorus plus 4-7 week.

Thank you!

3 gallons gives an average of 1/2 per plant, 5 gallons gives an average of 1 oz. per plant.

Sure, sure, selection and dialing in can produce more, but those are my averages. I usually only keep a plant that can produce 1 oz+. in a 5 gallon, under a 400 watt.

Edit: I think you'd be better with less plants and larger pots. You could really work with about 4 plants in that space. I toyed with 1 gallon bags, and I don't think it's worth the trouble, in a lot of ways. You're going to be dealing with root constriction, and that effects quality big time. Don't be discouraged though, do it your way and see what's what.

I think a 400 watt lamp maxes out at about 7 gallons of dirt. Just my opinion. I pushed to 12 gallons was getting diminishing returns. You need some intense light to fill a 30 gallon pot with roots. Just my 2 cents.

Most 3 and 5 gallons are about 1' in diameter, on average. You can fit about 16 in the footprint, running a 4x4 configuration, therefore about 1/2 lb. every month on a single light rotating garden, dialed in, naturally selected, with 8 in every month and 8 out. Pushing higher numbers with more dialing and mono-cropping the best of the best and splitting them 50/50.

You can run the entire veg on 240 watts of flouros, if you're creative. I think it would be possible to crank about 1/2 a lb. for under $60 a month, if you really push limits.
