400w setup?

Hey, everyone. I'm interested in setting up a new 400w hps cab and am having problems sorting out the ventilation. I've read the ventilation 101 thread but I'm now more confused than ever. Up till now I've just matched fan and scrubber sizing if even using scrubbers, but I've run into a problem now.

I want to step a 150w hps up to 400w in a new 2'd x 3'w x 5'h cab, but can't get the right fan/scrubber. I have a Dayton 134cfm for 150w grows and was going to get a Phat Filter 150 for it, but since deciding to go up to 400w I think that may be too small of a fan(?) I was thinking it'd get too hot with that fan/scrubber combo. Could someone let me know if that's correct or not, please?

There is also a Phat Filter 200cfm filter, and maybe I could pair it with a 171cfm Valuline fan??

I'm just looking for feedback so I can knock this problem out as soon as possible and get on with it. Thanks ahead to all who can help!

high man, here is a link to my budbox build where i used a 180CFM blower coupled with a Can2600 to cool my cab, ...i built it originally with twin 150's in a cooltube and upgraded to a 400CMH in a SuperSun II aircooled, ...in both configurations i used a pc fan to cool the lights.

bozo's budbox

...if you are confused then you are not alone, ...so err on the safe side and get yourself a fan way bigger than you think you need, ...it is MUCH easier to dial down a fan than it is to replace one that proves too small.

peace, bozo

btw, that budbox fed my head very nicely for nearly 4 years before i upgraded to a 4 x 4 tent.

I think I may try a phat filter 150 on a 4" valuline (171 cfm) and air cool the light. Scrubber to hood to fan.

Well, now I'm planning on getting a 6" 435cfm valuline fan and a phat filter 375, if that isn't too much airflow. I've read that TOO MUCH airflow is a bad thing, but not sure where the line for that is exactly. This'll be around 10-12 times per minute for the airspace.

Any insight anyone can offer?

Yeah but, can anyone tell me the max amount of air exchange acceptable though? That's what I need to know now. I can't find it with the search feature.

Okay wait, according to ventilation 101 thread you want to have no more than .20 air exchange a minute, or once every 5 minutes. That means for a 2' x 3' x 5' cab that you want a max of only 8 cfms for a scrubber!!! Also in that thread it says you need to have an air-cooled hood on one fan, and the scrubber on another fan line, for no matter what the size of the room or cabinet. That's not practical at all though, and this is getting overwhelming at this point. Can someone offer me so practical advice PLEASE?

you want some practical advice? ...find the DIY link o rama thread, look through the list of cab builds for one that looks to be similar to what you want and go read it.

...go look at bozo'a cab, ...and go bigger than you think you need and do as supermanlives suggested and add a speedcontroller.
