400w mh and seedling distance

Anyone got a pic of what happens when young seedlings are too close to light? Not completely fried, just marginally affected.

they start 2 droop like crazy....start at about 50 cm...when they are used 2 it you can always lower the lamp....
ohw yea a rule of thumb,kinda.....keep your hand above a top/plant when the lamp go's over ....when its to hot for the hand its surtenly to hot for the plants...

Core gave some excellent advice. They will also look white like the green was stripped from them; that is caused by radiant heat.

I would reccomend not using hps for seedliogs; 400 watts is to much for them imo; fluros will help them grow faster then when they get bigger the 400 watter will be a good choice. hps uses orange which is good for flowering; but cool fluros and MH is good for vegging because it's got blue spectrum which is much better for vegging in.

young plants grow slower under hps than what they would with fluros and mh.

I started 20 seedlings in a C13 under a 400w MH and had the best results for seedling growth to date. Temps were mid 70s. My only problem was I couldn't keep up with that many feedings so frequently in those little pots. 4" pots with seedlings it was almost daily, or every other day. With that size light they will want to eat earlier than other methods.

But I kept it about 18"-24" away, used the back of my hand to judge heat, and they TOOK OFF.

Yeah core... you hit the nail on the head!

I use T5s and like them now... but just wanted to let the OP know 400w can be done fine... if it's all you have.

15 to 18 inches will do just fine.

I would avoid ebay for all costs even if it's petty stuff like this because who buys molasses on ebay unless it's for other purposes?

Ebay gives all information over to the police willingly without any warrants. So Anyone doing busniess with ebay watch out cause many growers have goten busted from ebay because some people were randomly buying a few things that was not even suspicious like lights fluro bulbs and something else; ebay reported it to the police and the local police kept tabs on the guys house and he soon got busted; this was one of many stories I read when overgrow was up and running.

Thanks for the help! The new leaf growth is thin and twisted. It looks like moisture is being sucked out, kinda looks like wilted, dry lettuce.Sorry I have no camera to show the problem.
The soil it is in at the moment is some seed starter purchased at Armstrongs.
Watering has been with plain distilled Arrowhead. Humidity 50%. Temps at canopy is 73.

Damn that would explain why when I woke up this morning after me seedlings where drooping like crazy after their first 24 hours 8-10 inches under a 400w mh. Glad I found this thread. Hope I didn't kill'em.

Yeah, I put them back under my t5's and this morning they are doing better. I thought they where thirsty when they where drooping so I watered them a day earlier than I would have. I just hope the added stress doesn't hermi them all or something. Learn something new everyday.

I think I just wanted to get them under my 400w mh for better growth and jumped the gun a bit. I guess I'll just leave them under it for a few hours a day. They seemed to like that before I bumped up the time to 24 hours.

oh they were thirsty all right.

The stronger the light, the more "fuel" for the plant's "engine", the faster it grows, the more water it needs, the more fert it needs, etc. You are increasing it's metabolism.

Young plants need to be raised under gentle lighting, then "hardened off", put under the strong light for a little while at a time to get them used to it. If you put indoor raised young plants out in the full sun, they would most likely fry.

Thanks Heady, I never thought about the engine metaphor, make sense. I had started with them under the 400w for 4, 8, 12, 16, 24 hours. Stepping it up each day, but it must have still been too fast. I'm gonna try again but just bumping up the times slower, maybe two days of each.
