I just bought some black treacle, which is the european equivalent of molasses. I note it contains SO2 - ie sulphur dioxide. Is that a problem?

Lyle's Black Treacle is the brand name

Thanks for any help
It's likely there as a preservative. That product is made for human consumption and based on that, I think it should be fine. You be the judge... take a glance at these links:

If using pure coco and adding molasses with water addition would sugars rinse from coco for reuse(of coco) and would the sugars promote mold growth in coco medium?

i've just recently started using grandmas molasses and in a few days noticed improvement in my three week olds, but i didn't know it did half of what it says here.

during my last grow when I was using molasses, I noticed that it made water more acidic. Could molasses be used as a pH down or will it work like lemon juice and just temporarily lower pH?

Chitownstoner - Not sure what makes blackwheat honey different, but I've read that people have used honey, corn syrup, rice syrup and even raw cane sugar. I'd stick with what's been documented and proven. Why not try it out and let us know?

alegoblin - I have no experience with coco and I can't answer your question. Hopefully someone else will.

drifter421 - Spread the word, bro!

master shake - I've never used molasses to lower pH. (When I have to, I use potassium carbonate.) I feel if it was useful to lower pH the 3LB would probably have mentioned it.

Sorry if I did not read all of this, as I have read and read about mol.
My question is, is Grandma's Molasses black strap type?
I have found that actual black strap molasses is hard to find on a grocery shelf.

If not, it is wasting time to use it.

you should easily find blackstrap on the shelf at most health-food stores (and/or feed stores, depending on your location.) stores like Whole Foods, Lazy Acres, etc. i know trader joes does not carry it. i use plantation

Molasses is ok. Black strap grade molasses is good.

High fructose corn syrup is better.

Its a cleaner, purer source of energy. Cheaper too.

Not organic, but chemical. "Corn syrup" alone is a natural product, however.

Here's a little info...

Here's a little info...

...Regarding molasses and myco.

12. How Do I Help Develop More Mycorrhizae In The Soil?

Mycorrhizae are a living organism that can multiply but they require proper nutrients. While mycorrizhae obtain nutrients from their environment, they will also get a significant boost if they are provided with humic acids 1. Also adding some molasses will provide important nutrients for the Mycorrhizae to multiply.

As well as needing the basic food that humic acids and molasses provide Mycorrhizae also need minerals. One mineral that has been identified is cobalt 2, which can be easily provided by kelp 3. Because Super-Grow's Kelp Extract is completely water-soluble it provides an excellent source of cobalt and other nutrients.

Mollasses is where its at. I love the stuff, tastes great too. Might drop or raise your ph so watch it. :headbange
Hopefully they'll all be professional growers and have a nifty PH meter buckled onto their leather belt ready to raise 'er up or bring 'er down!

So what is the 'PH' of molasses? Does anyone know? Is it relevant? Should I be checking my run-off?

Just curious - as usual.

so if i just spray my plants with a light emulsion of molasses and mineral water they'll benefit immediately?
is a kelp spray recommended for better results?

I always use both together as a foliar spray.

If you want to use Maxicrop (seaweed extract) then add 1 tablespoon to a gallon of water and add 1/2 teaspoon of molasses to the same gallon of water.

This mixture provides a good defense against powdery mildew as well as mites. Apply as often as desired and try to hit the branches, stalk and the underside of the leaves.

If you can try and buy your molasses at a feed store or a farm supply store. It's really cheap - as in $10.00 for 3.5 gallons.
