it seems to be a power box with a cord you could plug into a 240v dryer outlet and its got a built in timer. personally I'd need a longer cord and I dont know about the safety issues involved. but it would be nice to burn twice as many lights without even talking to an electrician. so what do yall think?

Funny, someone on another thread asked about how to hook into his dryer outlet without messing with the wiring and I suggested that he make something similar to this - sans the timer.

The power cord could, most likely, be easily replaced with a cord you make to the size you want - that would be the cleanest modification. Otherwise, just make an extension cord and make sure to use the same kind of male and female ends. You might want to use the same size wire as the original cord, you might want to go bigger - just make sure you get wire big enough for the length of your run.

That's a pretty hefty load to put through a timer. You should check to see if the control has relays or if it switches directly through the timer. Find out if the start-up is sequential or simultaneous. If it's a good quality control, the price isn't bad.

Bump.

I want a unit like this but I'm confused about how it works. Can someone enlighten me? Does the 30 Amps mean you need to have it plugged into a power outlet rated for 30 A's? Or, does this make it safe to run a bunch of electricity? Anyone? Thanks

I have one of those from NGW. There is no internal timer anymore. If they are selling you one of the units with the internal timer then it is old and don't buy it. The new version is a regular 15amp 120v digital timer hooked to a "trigger" cable into the box. The reason they changed the design is b/c ppl were having timer failures and had to send the whole box back for repair. Now just replace the timer. Anyway, I don't know about installing a longer cord. Maybe you can custom order a new cord online somewhere and just hook it in?

You can get custom loadcenters at www.nowirenuts.ca. Never have to replace the digital timer in these loadcenters, tons of options.....

This LC has a 25ft cord and a 50A plug, not a range cord. Some of the loadcenters with a range plug with 6 foot cord are only rated for 40A. With 8 1000 watt ballasts and a 10A 120V constant is running over 40A.

You have four wires, two hots (120V each), neutral, and ground. You can supply 120V or 240V. Both hots should be balanced for amps.

this box rocks just for the fact that you can use one low amp rated timer to run so much, if you plug it into a time delay for overtemp and power outages you have good protection for up to 4 1000 watt lights and 10 amps 110 accessories, i opened up mine and rewired the plug, just removed it and paying attention reattached the heavier wire running approx 120 feet from the original dryer outlet, useing split bolts and lotsa regular black electrical tape i wired this end, simple but you do have to open up the wall or gain enough access to cut the wire and work with it as you strip the wire and tighten the split bolts and CAREFULLY wrap them to isolate the three 220 wires from each other then wrap the whole thing, this will allow you to set up this box where it works best for you. i also took note of the guts of the unit while i had it open and its heart is a furnace relay, looks like a bootleg could be put together easily.....j
