Hello friends, i was wondering if i can cut off lower branches and buds that aren't getting the light as the tops are? I cut lower branches a couple times already since they were a foot tall in veg. Its a sativa dominant Quantum Kush, it has plenty of air flow but lower stuff that isn't getting light should i cut if off or is 3 weeks to far?. And i have fan leaves well under the canopy that are still in contact with plants that don't get any light, should i just remove those as well? Thanks

definitely shave the under that arent gonna get any light. any bud sites mainly, some fans are ok the leave behind i feel, but i go ahead to trim it clean an even on the bottoms. check out a technique called lollipopping. i usually like to get it all done by week 2 at the latest, but have done it in week 3 several times with no substantial stress noticed

Thanks for the quick response. Ive lollipopped them as well the branches that are getting the most light taking each first and second bud site off. I just don't know about fan leaves that are under the canopy that get zero light to leave on or not.

After wk 3 it translates to stress, always do it right at this point or before, but I sometimes do a couple rounds of defoliation a few days apart around wk 5 too

Defoliation: Hi-Yield Technique?

defoliation is a contentious issue and the answers to whether or not it will work for you are best found through trial and error, ...it's unlikely you will get into an argument with yourself and the lack of drama will help you find your answer fairly quickly.

keep in mind that this isn't your last grow, it's just practice for the next, so even when you make mistakes, it's no big whoop, actually, mistakes are your best learning experiences so embrace them and begin experimenting.

...i can't count the times i did something that folks on these forums told me couldn't be done so don't be afraid to play around a little, this is how you will find the ways that work best for YOU.

peace, bozo

btw, i defoliate my plants regularly and without mercy.

Its not hard :
Click your name in the top right corner of the website
Then click "my albums"
Then click your album you want to upload your picture too
Then click "upload image"
Then click "choose file"
Then choose "take photo or video" or "photo library"
Then choose a album your photo is in
Then choose a photo to upload
Then click "upload pictures" (it takes awhile for me sometimes)
Then click "save changes"

I disagree that lollypopping causes stress. Pruning in general isn't very stressful to the plant if done properly. I lollypop at any stage. I seldom do other kinds of pruning after switching to 12/12. Topping in veg causes little if any stress unless it is done severely. The pause that is frequently seen after topping is not stress, it is the plant re-routing, relocating things to the secondary tops. Good luck. -granger

As a rule of thumb you don't wanna mess with a plant that's been in flower for 2 weeks. 2 weeks into bloom is the time you need to let the plant grow without any stress as this can cause her to Hermie.

Ahhhh, those were the days....less sophisticated contraptions...pagers. Had one blazoned on hip for work.

If pruning/defoliating happen soon after sex is known, agree....doable.

I've had some plants (due to my clumsiness), breaking branches....and no hermie traits. Not all that convinced by topping, pruning creates that....however, it does momentarily stress the plant.
