3 Leafs from birth...

Is this a rarity? I've never seen a seedling start out with 3 leaf sets before. Not sure of it's genetics. I was given a handful of bag seed that looked to me like non-viable seeds. I threw the whole batch down and Got over 30 plants. I kept 14 of the hardiest ones. I am kind of excited to see what come out of them lol. Have any of you ever had this? What was the strain?

Trifoliate

It's a trait that sometimes shows up, not strain specific. Some think it contributes to yield but I've been told otherwise by a number of breeders. Looks cool tho! I have a trifoliate Skywalker OG, it's something special but I wouldn't attribute it to the extra leaf set.

i believe that's known as a "trifoliate", and it's something that you'll see every now and then. the plant will be fine, sometimes they grow out of it and sometimes they don't.

the first plant i ever grew about 10 years ago was a trifoliate, and for a while i thought all weed plants were supposed to be like that. it's just a minor mutation

Trifoliate.

Pretty cool when it happens. The trifoliate leafsets will turn into a staggered whorling pattern as she matures. Some grow out of it quick others will hold it for quite a few nodes. If you time the bloom just right you should see a monster cola on it. When a couple tri's bred together some of the offspring had quadsets. You may read something about them being low yielding but mine did well enough. I just made sure she got center stage and a lager plate than her sisters. The strain was a homebrew about 4 generations down the line of what was said to be a Bubba Kush seed crossed with a male "juicy". He came from a local blend that tasted like juicyfruit the bubblegum you get in stores but sadly mom got ripped and it is no longer in circulation.

Thanks everybody. It's pretty neat. Love growing these misc. seeds. Lord only knows what you'll get out of them lol. Just for fun, I'll add pics of her as she grows. Hopefully it's a she anyhow. Time will tell. Peace

Nice, mutations are always interesting.

Trifoliate plants are cool. It shouldn't affect growth but they're cool to watch, especially if it changes as it matures.

hey down, here's a couple pics of a HOL Midnight Madness tri. I had 2, but one grew out of it with the 3rd leaf set. Ganesh's OG Kush Bx was one of the parentals in this cross. When I posted the tri pics, an ICM member pointed me to a og kush thread that had pics of several ogk trifoliates. In this case, the trait is strain-related.

This plant is the tallest in this run, so it's likely to be a male. I'm debating whether to collect pollen from it or not.

Trifoliates are more often male and hermie in my experience, plus they tend to have some other huge weakness to counter-balance the leaf sets. On rare occasion a really good one comes along, and you should save it, clone it, and breed it!
