I'll be carrying my old Winchester XTR Sporter .338 Winchester Magnum
...custom-built Ruger Super Redhawk .454 Casul.
neither of these choices surprise me, considering where you live. if i owned them here, folks would assume that i was a recoil-loving nutjob. i do miss my 45-70 though. it was "fun to shoot" with the handloads a friend gave me for bear medicine. maybe i AM that nutjob...

wouldnt it take a while for a bison to bleed out from a bow and arrow?
yeah, a few minutes even with a perfect double-lung. i watched a video of a fellow hunting bison years ago. he put two from a .338 right where they needed to go behind the shoulder. damn thing didn't even stop chewing its cud! guide told the hunter "let's give him a few minutes. that bulls dead, he just don't know it yet..." about three minutes later, it laid down...

A Marlin .45-70 is a fine brush gun here, and I have known folks who routinely carry them who hunt in thick brush.

There's a gunsmith in Anchorage who for years customized them, especially the break-down version. I want to say it was Wild West Guns in Los Anchorage.

That .454 with a hardened alloy hot load in it kicks (painfully) worse than the S&W 4" .500 S&W Magnum I sold (traded), even when I was shooting Cor-Bon 440-grain hard-cast HOT loads from the .500 Mag., mostly because the .500 had notable weight to it that helped to counter the recoil, whereas shortening the barrel on that Ruger lessened the weight that was already much less, so the Ruger literally slaps the bejeesus out of your hand, even when held very tightly. It's not a gun you shoot too often for recreation. Just enough to try and achieve proficiency.

But that Ruger doesn't beat the shit out of my dash on a snowmobile when wrapped in a towel there on the trail, either, which was but one issue with the S&W .500 Mag. It was a great gun, but a fucking boat anchor.

When you hunt with a bow, you still aim for vital mass, but you try to NEVER chase an animal you hit. Let them lay down and bleed. Running after them elevates adrenaline, and they can run a while.

You might hit them in an easy-to-access area, but make the mistake of chasing them, and who knows where you'll have to do your field dressing, quartering and bagging. I know of a couple stoned hippie hunters who've made that mistake. ;)

Bull moose can get that big, and bison can get even bigger.

The two stoned hippie hunters were me and a former friend. We finally cornered the bull moose that had been struck twice by two arrows, in a semi-closed sort of tunnel through alder bushes with the branches arching overhead like an image from the book 'Sleepy Hollow', and he had finally turned, decided he wasn't running anymore, and was snorting at us with his ears back. (*When a moose puts their ears back, it's often not a good sign of neighborly intentions).

The beauty of that .338 Win Mag that many often don't realize, is it can be loaded down to fairly light-weight projectiles, with a decent but controllable (and accurate) amount of powder, traveling at lightning speeds, and can be a 'reach out and touch someone/something tack-driver of a rifle, or loaded up to heavier projectiles and smack the fuck out of something hard(!!) at somewhat closer distance.

It really has a wide range of application, and many don't realize this.

But yeah, loaded hot, even with the machined muzzle brake, it's not a 'friendly' gun where the shoulder is concerned. It's one you hug tightly and try your best not to flinch in anticipation of the recoil when loaded for big game. And with that muzzle brake, it sounds distantly like a fucking howitzer. A quiet gun, it is not.

in all fairness to the moose, you HAD just put two arrows in his ass & then chased him through the woods...;)
A Marlin .45-70
i'd like to have one. my Marlin is a 30-30, the centennial model. my 45-70 was a Ruger no. 3 carbine, a falling block. it didn't weigh but about 6.5 to 7 lb, and the thing had a straight grip, all of which made it entertaining to shoot... those Marlin Guide guns look like the shit to me! :good:

I traded a 1969 Land Cruiser with a partially seized rebuilt engine and a home-done rag-top 'sky light' with a rubber mat for a cover, for an older Winchester XTR .30-30 lever gun originally from a river village, when a young man came to town, got drunk and high and couldn't afford his room tab.

That hotel/lodge is no longer there, burning down many years ago. But the lodge owner or an employee of his traded that .30-30 to me for the '69 Land Cruiser. (*I personally loathe lever guns due to the complex and convoluted nature of a thorough cleaning, the pain in the ass involved in such an effort, and a gun that can't be easily cleaned is a pain in the ass in my opinion that's inevitably waiting to fail).

my 336 bolt slides out damn near unassisted when you work the lever. i aint done it in years, but all you do is pull the trigger while the bolt is all the way back...i think :dunno: i'll check on that tomorrow, that rifle hasn't been out of the safe in 8 years i think. i've never seen a Winchester taken down. might be a reason for that.

About +12 F. on the front porch mercury and glass at the moment, which is almost 5:13 PM Alaska Time.

Going out to light the charcoal grill in a bit to grill a couple of ribeye steaks that are nearly 2-lbs. each... but not quite 2-lbs./ each. Searing both sides, then setting to the cooler side of the grill to roast a bit with the lid closed due to thickness of the meat and not wanting to burn the outside of the steaks while the middle is still cold and raw. That's one problem with 2"-thick ribeyes of sizable proportion.

I'll find something more worthy to complain about shortly, I'm sure.

28 F at the moment, that's above the high for the last few days. day after tomorrow, it's "supposedly" getting up into low 60s, and highs in the 50s for the next week or so. but we all know you can't trust an f'n weatherman. they do good getting sunset/sunrise times right. ;)
