hooked up with an old bud of mine and talking about the old days and the stuff we use to get he mentioned in passing he had some seeds packed away.... somewhere?
they were from the best of the best he ran across, very hashy tasting, xpando sinse and it took no prisoners
this was 3 months ago....

he found em! :dance013:

looks like around 40-50 seeds in the vial, its been kept air tite and they look to be in very good condition
which is good news
i put 10 in water and 3 have cracked the shells since sat.
they don't want to push tails out and are sluggish in that dept.

any suggestions on helping these relics from the past come to life?
i used a razor and scored the shells to ease on the come out.
would anything like maybe a mild dose of liquid karma give em a boost of energy

With old seeds I would do a couple different germination methods but yes soak or get that taproot to pop and baby them until they get their legs.

congrats on the old genetics, wonder how long it will flower for especially if it were some old school outdoor sativa.

can't wait to see how this grows and hope you get them to pop for you

As Granger2 suggested in the thread, removing the shell extremely carefully has worked for me very well with old seeds. I have yet to try it again, but it made it so the seeds were viable when all else failed. In my opinion old seeds have less energy stored to sprout and use almost all of it trying to exit the seed casing. If they do crack they do not have enough vigour to reach the surface and die. By taking off the shell you let the seedling use the energy it has stored for growth and it then might be able to reach the surface and survive.

If you do try this method, try it with a few only and make sure you soak to seperate the shell from the embryo. Read the thread Grainger2 posted for more info if you haven't and let us know if it workes for you. Those seeds would be interesting to see sprout, good luck.

You might have success by scoring or filing the edges of the seed so that once wet it can split open more easily. I do mine with a nail file, others use a piece of tight grit sandpaper and put it in a medicine bottle with the seeds and shake it up. Same thing, just trying to abrade the edges so they can split open easier.

big thanks to all,
and to granger especialy...
I have a scalpel and score the seeds until open.
and do as you say and ***carefully*** remove the embryo and take it from there.

I'm very excited to be able to maybe resurrect some strains from the past!

In very late to this but I just germed the last 6 20+ year old seeds I had using superthrive and got one to pop. I tried 35 other seeds from the same batch with no success. I wish I would have tried superthrive on all of them.

you know its kind of crazy but when i have a good lookn seed that jus don't crack....i stick it in my mouth jus like cracking a sunflower seed....very gently use your teeth like a vise and don't damage the embryo...have running water to rinse as soon as cracked ...put em in papertowels and voila....hope this helps ..dj
