i am about to set up my first grow room. for my first run i plan to veg and flower in the same room, until i set up a perpetual system.

i plan to buy 4 x gavita pro 1000 de each requiring 240v.
the actual grow space will be close to 8.5x8.5

the room currently has 2 x 220v oultets.
my question is how should i approach the use of these outlets?some say i still need a box, others say the outlets are fine to use.
and can anybody clarify the difference between 220v and 240v and if they are compatible?

You have three two hots and a neutral that make up 220v or 240v, either way you should at least run a pony panel of one leg to run the stuff that's not 240v.

always thought the difference between 220 and 240 was academic ... of no real consequence ... not a worry ...

but do you know how much WATTAGE those two outlets will handle? I mean the outlets may be for low wattage use and you won't be able to run those lights from them.

see if you can work out how many WATTS your lights use ... and then look in yr meter box to check the fuses or circuit breakers linked to yr outlets to find how much power (in Watts or Amps) yr outlets will pass before overheating. (AMPS is Watts divided by VOLTS. eg: 2500 watts divided by 240 Volts equals apx 10 Amps. Dig?)

Be sure to include power used by ballasts, fans, etc.
Then multiply your breakers amperage rating by 0.7.
That will give you the headroom for a safe grow.

Never load a circuit to the full capacity of the breakers for continuous use.

Done quite a bit of researching sinse i posted however--Thanks to all for the quick replies!
I've opted to have an electrically inclined friend help me out with setting up a panel. the age of the building for me is a slight concern so i'm going to err on the side of caution on this one.
