What size pot should I use for my main veg cycle? I'm thinking 2 Gallons.

It depends on:
.How many days you want vegging
.Strain?
.Light/inventory

2gal is good for vegging, but i think you need 3~4gal, to do your best.

I would like to veg in the mid size pots for around 30 days.

Strains are a local skunk #1 Ibl from a friend who blows it up outdoor, and some fire bagseed. (trying to get my rooms dialed in while I wait on seed orders to come in)

cups are vegging right now in a small cfl cab. Will be put under a 1kw MH for the rest of veg after what is now the flowering room is empty. Then the bulb will be changed out for HPS when flowering begins.

what if I did 20 oz cups-> 5 gal -> 7 gal? I would think that there would be way too much volume for the little ones in a 5 gal.

first off i grow in coco so root growth is sometimes quicker than soil not sure what medium you are growing in but here is what i would do for explosive root and vegetive growth...

I use half litre / 18 oz pots to start with... 14 days they are like this..

i then move into 3.5 litre / 1 gallon pots where i would veg for one more week then put into flower...

this run im vegging for another 3 weeks and then flowering in a 10L / 3gallon pot

3 gallon is good for 10 onces of weed not sure how much your wanting off of your plants but you could go from 1 gallon into 5 after 4 weeks veg

so in simple terms confusing myself...
20oz cups 14 days
1 gallon 14 days
5 gallon ?? till finish

If you are new to this I would stay away from small plants in big pots as it can be more difficult to figure out how to water correctly. Additionally, it can take more time to correct deficiencies initially because of the long intervals between waterings-feedings.

Yeah I go 20oz party cup to, a half gallon square 7" tall pot. There about 24 inches by the time they start filling my coco in the half gallon.


5 gallon of coco is...a huge plant! like a freaking pound

Usually I transplant at a 4:1 size difference, measuring by volume. So for my cfl rig I go 4oz dixie cup for rooting -> 16oz solo for early veg -> half gallon pot for late veg/flower. seems to work great

The bigger pot you can put them in from the start without stressing them due to too much moisture/not enough air is the way to go. Plant growth is almost always faster when given "unlimited" root space. Root stress seems to be the major reason for up potting. Some kinds of pots & culture techniques can minimize this and allow you to get away with a smaller volume of soil. Fabric pots, "root" pots and similar all use different methods to decrease root circling/binding and to increase branching.

Gradual up potting is used because of:

1. Space concerns, smaller pots take up less space. Doesn't seem critical with 3 plants, imagine with 30 or even 300.
2. Smaller pots that are overwatered or saturated for another reason won't stay that way nearly as long as a big pot. Each time you water that water will basically "pull" air through the soil stack. If your mix has little or no nutrient in it each watering is going to also be supplying the plant with fresh nutrients. In a large pot you may water so infrequently as to make this a real issue.
3. Smaller pots will be shaded more quickly by canopy. This can be important outside, as full sun hitting a black pot can produce root-lethal temps quite quickly in many places.
4. Less outlay of materials. Hey, some of us are old retired farts on fixed incomes

There's really no right or wrong way to go with pot size. Bigger is almost always better, but you can get away with a LOT without many problems.
