2 1ks or 4 600s?

I have on hand 2 1000s and 4 600s which would be better to use and why? thanks

It really depends on your space/number of plants. The 4 600s will cover a bigger area than the 1ks, infact I think i've read that 600s are the most efficient lumen/watt HPS lamps available.

It all depends on your invidivual needs.

Well, if you can't use all of them then I would go for the 600's. Better coverage and more watts

ya def cant use them all, and the area is sorta undefined, the room itself is about 6X12 but i dont want to use it all, but i want to max out my yield, as for plants was thinking along the lines of 12-18 in 5gal pails(soil)

Four will work fine on a 3'-6" x 12'-0" set up. Mine works great on that layout, with 2 more units covering an additional 3'-6" x 6'-0" area.

Given the long and narrow grow area you have an inline set up will give the coverage you need. Before very long I will post pics of my use of the 600's in the scrog environment.

Power consumption: 4x600=2400 x $.14 x 18 hours= $6.05 per day during veg

Power consumption: 4x600=2400 x $.14 x 12 hours= $4.03 per day during flower

Add up the wattage of fans and other equipment in the grow and use the above formula for the balance of cost.

so how should i position them all then? and what about the plants under? 4 lights in a row, using a 3X12 area? and then say 4 plants under each light in 5 gal soil pails? is 5 gal to big? should i use the 3.5s? I will be waiting to see your pics for sure.

The 5 gallon pails are an excellent choice (available at Lowe's/Home Depot/paint stores. Bear in mind that the pots sold at grow shops are not true volume (the black plastic ones) the 5 gallon buckets are in fact 5 gallon capacity.

4 plants per light is the optimum choice for a scrog using the 600's and in a sog arrangement the pots/plants will be smaller with up to 8 or 9 per light. You can have high yield with 4 per light as you will veg longer in scrog than in sog set ups.

As a MMJ card holder and caregiver I am limited to 6 mature plants per patient so I grow them large for maximum yield and in so doing keep within Oregon's MMJ program rules and regulations.

Okay: 2x1000=2000 x $.14 x 18 hours = $5.04

2x1000=2000 x $.14 x 12 hours = $3.36

I understand you will have a total of 16 plants in soil ? You can easily fit 16 medium large vegging plants under a single 600W and just repot before flowering. A week of veg after repotting and they should be ready to go. A 2*2 closet with a couple of hundred watts in flourescents or MH could also be used for the first 3-4 weeks veg before putting them under the single 600W. Vegging watts are expensive - don't waste them.
If you're scrogging you might want a little more time under the final lights to fill the screen. I take it plant count is an issue for you since you want to do so much vegtime in the first place?

just getting this started, so that is why i am limited to plants, def gunna go scrog, next run should be able to increase the plant number for sure. i dont like the wasted time and hydro that big plants takes, but for now i have no choice.

I think everyone is missing the part about the 400 extra watts provided by running 4 600's. 3 600's would be more appropriate. Anyway, 4 600's wins hands down.

For stationary growing I'd vote for the 600's. If you wanna go with the 1000's use light movers like Mr. Wags said.

you can run less during VEG, yes.


i ran 1/2 during veg.
although MH bulbs throw light LESS far then HPS (i know i worded that wrong)
my lumin meter says mh needs atleast 6 inchess less distance.

I don't mind helping Stonedage, he is sincere about the request. Probably just having a bad math night. 2 600's work fine for the 16 little girls in veg, assuming you will have 4 lights with 4 girls each for flowering.
