1st Time Growin questions

I have a wooden box grow area of 30"h 12"w 9"d, and two maxibright 125w red cfl. Ventilation is from 3 pc fans and an old psu. The grow needs to be stealthy, so low odour and low profile. Iv yet to buy seeds, but im considering nirvanas Ice or NL, and if i cud afford it chronic / bubblegum from somewhere. Iv also got some compost left over from my allotment, mostly like a manure/mud sort of mix, with occasional twig. as well as miracle gro etc

Im not lookin to grow for prof, just my own supply for the normal reasons. atm i just want a proof of concept batch and ill consider fine tuning quality etc in subsequent grows.

1. What are your thoughts on my seed choice? sugg welcome
2. What sort of soil should i go for, if i shouldnt really use wat iv got
3. Iv not really considered a sativa, but would ultimately love to grow as its my fave high, but indicas are generally smaller iv read. Is there a low odour strain i could fit in 30"?
4. Would it be possible to use a screen in there to tie down plants to(scrog?)
5. What sort of lighting times shud i go with?
6. I was thinkin that to keep height low id have a shorter than normal veg anyway, so am i right in thinkin the lack of a red light shudnt harm my potential max yield too much?
7. wat sort of yield shud i expect to get given a fairly problem free first grow?

1seed choice not much room so i would say an auto flower
2I dont know I grow DWC (Check Soil Forum)
3First grow in a small space I still vote an A/F
4 LST mite work better In such a small space ,But yes you could
5 Depend A/F 20-4,18-6 ,sativa 12-12 ,Indica maybe 1-2 weeks 18-6 to a 12/12
6 I dont know about cfl's I use HID once agaian check micro grows and the design forum
7 1/4 to 1/2 ounce ?I may be wrong

1-northern light for low order,2-always use new soil to avoid problems in the future,3-with that space you could grow 1 nice plant to like 30" as long as the foliage does'nt touch the bulb's and you place said bulb's on the walls 1 high 1 mid cab, 3- you could do a sativa in that space just flower it early like a clone at 2" but most sativa's like lotsa light maybe 1 more bulb?, 4- you coull place the bulbs in the middle of the cab going from top to bottom and grow the plant around the light's tied to the wall's like tomatoe trellis, 5- i'd go with 24-0 for veg and 12/12 for flower, 6- with 30" you could maybe vea indica to 5" and get a 30"or sativa veg to 2-3" and get a 30"or 5'er sativa's are like that sometimes,i would definitly get some red spectrum in there to fatten the flowers up it'll be worth it' 7-since it's your first time maybe a 1/4 gram per watt per month for 8 wks. realistically speaking with no co2 injection 1/2 g per watt per month should be your goal.

If I put a light mid cab, would I have to rotate the plants? may bump up my wattage with a couple 23watters, should i do this sooner rather than later?

Also, how many weeks veg would say NL take to grow 5"?

If you plan on growing in soil I would consider:
1. Do you want to go organic or synthetic?
2. Are you a cheap DIY kind of person or do you want the local hydro shop to take all your money?

If you are an organic kind of person and you seem to have some kind of organic ingredients already maybe you should start here.

well i was thinking you could put the lights on the wall and tie the foliage so it does'nt touch the bulb as it grows that way you get max light coverage all the way down the plant for 1 plant i think that would work cool i did it once but veg'd to long and had like 5" in the roof kinda bent all over the place, with 250 watt's it should'nt take veg that long it also depend's on which northern light's you have there are some knock off's that are all sick and stuff but a good strain of NL would prolly reach 5" in less than 2 wk's i know that's a real general answer but i don't have any exp with those light's prolly more like 10 day's or so, with good light coverage which you have and a complete nute formula good ventilation and no other set back's like pest's or disease's it could grow 1" a day in veg,ya know with that small space you might benefit from a cheap Co2 homebrew to speed up growth by a few day's,i'm not sure if you can still find it but years ago they had a vitamin mix for brewing beer that smelled kinda like pineapples and it almost covered the yeast smell that would only cost like 10-15 buck's top's to hook up cuz it's just sugar, brewers, yeast, and that vitamin mix but without the mix the whole house will reek of yeast so keep that in mind.

Today I went and bought some John Innes no.1, which seems like just better soil than the general stuff i been using to grow my regular stuff in (basil etc). As to going organic and synthetic, i naturally lean to organic as I like the harmonies I see in nature, and also heard of people saying synthetic may give a harsher smoke, but this can happen with organic i presume?

Defo a cheap kind of DIY person lol, but id rather not fuck it up if it meant spendin a little extra on good product

yea man organic is the only REAL way to go with soil, i think pretty much with any kinda nutes be they org. or synth you'll want to flush the pot's for the last week to get the natural taste of the strain instead of the nutes cuz i mean let's say you were using something with fish emulsion in it, it might taste kinda sick without a flush i know the grow would reek like hell cuz i've tried it, emuls. would be a great nute if not for the smell, but anyway's don't forget to flush with plain water the last week whatever you decide to use. DIY not only saves a ton of money but it's fun as hell finding stuff to construct a good gspot, i'm so cheap i once used a cardboard wardrobe shipping box for a cab it was 3'x3'x4' and worked great for a 600 watt grow of shishkaberry lotsa luck dude. N

would it be possible, or at least someway easy, to just time your nutrient and feeding schedule to supply just enough to the plant, leavin a week to go, and force the plant to use up its own reserves?

yea they have what's called a feeder line that you can by at any home depot type store or maybe wal-mart all it is, is a wick that you stick in plain water or water with nutes whatever and the end of the wick goes to the bottom of your pot so the plant takes the moisture only when it needs it, i use to use these when i was going to be out of town for a while with like a 25%-50% nute solution just to make sure the plants were fed at all times i've whent for almost 2 weeks with no prob.'s these are great because it has to do with the plant knowing when it's hungary and taking just enough to fiil up, it use's the wick as like a straw to suck the moisture up.

1. Any seed that doesn't suck. LOL. Really though, just get seeds from a reputable seed bank or seller. Don't try to skimp on these because I've seen too many growers do it.

2. Always use new soil when you're growing. It will have up to four weeks of natural nutes in it, letting you avoid adding nutes for that long. Used soil can have a bunch of pests and hidden grow busters in it. Don't do it.

3. Personally, I've never had troubles with the Indica, but then again, I haven't worried about smell in a while - and I know that I can't smell it as much as I used to anyway. If things start to smell, there are plenty of ways to cover that up or clean it up.

4. Probably. Though I'm not sure I'm reading your question correctly. Hard to tell what anyone is asking sometimes.

5. Lighting times change as the plant grows. The more light than dark, the vegetative grow stage will continue forever. But if you add more dark than light, then it's into flowering you go. After that, it's a bunch of personal choice. Some like certain time frames and others like others. Whatever works for you.

6. So long as you're proving the light a plant would usually get outside, then you'll be in the clear. If you do anything else, your plant will freak out.

7. It depends from grower to grower. See how it goes and just enjoy the process. Anything you can grow and smoke is a good grow...unless you're in a contest with someone else.
