When you start in a container that large, the roots tend to grow along the sides of the container then out the drainholes leaving a big empty space in the middle,a poor utilization of available media. Its always best to start out in a small container like 4 inch nursery pot or 2 pint container, let the rootball fill that container, then transpl;ant up a size. You need a minimum of two transplants, three is better.I start in 4 inch pot, when they are about 6-8 inches tall I go to 2 gal. to veg, then 3 gal to flower

While it is very true that you need to start in something smaller so that the roots don't just shoot to the bottom, most experts will agree that you only ever want to transplant 1 time during your grow.

yeah 3 transplants seems way over kill to me but now that i think of it, i do 3 myself!! however 2 of them are early during veg.... first i take the clones and put them into red cups (1), then i take them from the red cups to the 1 liter tanks (2), then i put them in the 7 or 5 gallon buckets for flower (3).... so i guess 3 is good to me....

For your problem h4L: stick the plant that has roots coming out of the bottom on top of another bucket!!!!! this method has been used before, it just lets the MJ roots grow longer and deeper, which is what they like to do in the first place. This way you wont have to cut the roots or let them die, and plus that big plant will be able to eat more. Try it out!!

good luck

Yeah I only transplant once. From the hydrocloner to the growing pot. From past experience with other plants they seem to go into shock and sets growth back a week or so.

Yes a large root mass is wanted but it's not worth it to me to loose 3weeks+ of growth.

Most experts say one transplant?I've been growing six years and learned soil grows from Measure G on overgrow,I definately beg to differ. Two transplants would be the minimum,as for shock or setting growth back, somebody must not be transplanting correctly.Three may be a lot unless you're finishing 4 ft plants but if you arent transplanting a couple of times, you're not utilizing the soil effectively.

Next time, trow a transplant in between and you wont see roots out of drainholes and your root system will be much more healthy.I start in a 4 inch nursery container,or 2 pint pot. From there I transplant to a 2 gal (NSI classic 600)when they are around 6-8 inches tall or when I find myself having to water every other day. When the plants are a couple feet tall I'll transplant to 3 gal(NSI classic 1200) to flower in.You really should have a minimum of two, three may be overkill but will only help your plant. You should experience zero slow down in growth or "shock" when transplanting, actually your plant should visably take off after transplantation
