Hello i have a couple of questions.
Im setting up a 1600w grow, how big area would that cover? its 4x400w.
What kind of exhaust fan do i need? how big so to say.

thats about it, thanks alot
Peace

Id say that 4x400 would do a pretty good job squared over a 10x10 area, depending on the reflectors being used, mabe a little less. This would also depend on the type of grow, the light would only be useful on the canopy so your pruning and supercropping technique would have to be above par.

As far as the fan goes, you have to think about volume, obviously smaller reflectors with 4 inch duct would require less CFM, but on average i would want to run atleast 600cfm, probably a bit more if youre using 6" duct.

Good luck with it, post pics of your progress. Keep it easy ~caddy

No way they'd cover 10x10 (that'd take 4k+)...3x3 per light is about ideal for 400's - or maybe slightly smaller depending on your grow style. The rule of thumb for light venting is 200cfm per 1k...I'd opt for a 6" inline to cool the 4 hoods.

]I'd say with four 400watters you probably want a area of 6x6, maybe a little less. But you will need to move around and be able to tend to your plants.
In a 6x6 room, your just over 40watts per sq ft, but your lights(depedning on hoods) should have a nice intensity covering a 2x2 area, maybe slightly larger. So if you leave yourself a foot around the perimeter of your garden, that a 5x5 growing area- giving you just over 60watts per sq ft.

Venting requirements will depend of a few factors. Do you plant to cool the lights seperately in hoods and exhaust the room with a second fan? Or vent the lights and room with one large exhaust? How are you ambient temps outside the room(your intake air, or you maybe be using a inline for a inatke-what were you thinking?

The day 1600 watts produces well in a 10x10 area-is the day I start shitting gold

I am growing in a 10x10 room currently using a 400 watt hps and only use one corner (sad but true) for 10 seedling plants, although i am adding a 1000 watt hps for when my plants get a little bigger. You could do 4 plants (depending on grow style, etc ) per 400 watts in part of the room. A 400 watt hps will lose it's canopy penetration at 24" distance from the plants or so - someone correct me if I am wrong. It's something like that anyway.
The general rule is you want at least 50 watts per square foot of grow/plant space, as Sandman stated.

Man talk about a jam up of lights and ducting...I wouldnt wanna use four hoods in an area that small. But yeah, now that i think of it 10x10 is a little large huh?... eh, i was stoned, sorry.

I started with a 1k over 4x4 and its too much. Its great at first, but towards the middle of the cycle, the tops grow like a foot from the light. I had light induced herms on my tops last harvest. But i also have 4x4 mylar walls that keep the light within a 5x5ft area. I wish i wouldve bought 600w instead.

I also run 440cfm to cool my hood. I wouldnt use anyless because i know Id be fighting temp issues. With 440cfm, i could put a chocolate bar on top of my reflector and it wouldnt even think about melting. IMO, overkill on the fan is always a good idea, unless noise is an issue.
