150w or 250w HPS and cold temp problems

Hello friends,

I have been growing cannabis for 2 years now and it has become my passion. Even though 2 years might seem like a decent experience i still haven't got a crop that i would consider successful. By successful i mean a decent yield of tight buds. What i got was only fluffy buds that were still a great smoke but not something to be proud of.

My grow setup at the moment is 100w HPS in a 19" x 19" x 34" box. It's a old freezer. I have two 4" vents 1 for intake and 1 for outtake. For my previous grows i used soil. I tried to grow 4 plants at the same time in that tiny space, out of witch only 2-3 ended up flowering either because some were males or because some simply didn't survive.

I keep this growbox in a basement witch has its advantages and disadvantages. Main advantage is that smell is not a problem and the temperature is somewhat constant year-round. The disadvantage is that its pretty cold ~52F summer and ~41F winter.

I use 12/12 light cycle right from the start. To deal with the low temps i use only 1 outtake vent and cover 90% of the intake hole to get ~77F during light on. During light off temps in the box are the same as in the room. I water my plants with the most basic 20-20-20 NPK nutrient that i found.

I am looking to upgrade my setup and i need some advice what would be best.

The plan is to grow 1 plant with SCROG method. Probably some AK47. I want to upgrage my lights to a 250w or 150w HPS. I would prefer the 250W but i don't know if that will be too much light for such a small space and damage the pant. Im not really worried about heat since i use only a portion of my vent potential. But i am worried about the temps being to low with lights off.

Initially i thought about going hydro, with hydro i could simply use a small aquarium heater in the reservoir and fix cold temp problem. But i cant risk going full hydro because 2-3 times a year there are power outages and that would kill my plants.

Today i came across "Hempy Bucket" and that sparked a idea. What if i put a aquarium heater at the bottom of the bucket, cover it with some clay pebbles and then fill the bucket with coco, will that work ?

Another option is to use a Electric Heater on a timer, but that thing is ~1500w witch is way too much energy consumption.

I know that i haven't asked a specific question but i need your help. I will appreciate any advice or idea that you can give me. Please share your thoughts about my setup and help me improve.

Peace.

I'll try to answer a few questions for you.

Both DWC and waterfarm-type drip systems can be run on battery powered air pumps if you have a power outage.

250w should be fine as long as you keep enough space between the light and the plants. You'll need no less than 4 inches between the tops and the bulb.

Recirculating air from your exhaust back to your intake will keep temps up if it's possible, although it will take away stealth.

If you are looking for a cheap fix to the whole needing more heat problem then you could grab some CFL bulbs and some "lamp cord kits" from Walmart and plug them in inside your grow cabinet. This may also help with yield and with the fluffy bud problems. You also might want to look into a strain that is known to have denser buds. IMO Indicas usually produce denser buds while Sativas are more likely to be on the fluffy side. If you have some cash to play around with then go LED and get a little space heater to blow towards your grow box. That should keep it warmer and LED's should help produce denser buds IME.

@Weedninja, battery powered pumps might be a good idea if i end up going full hydro. I usually turn off the vents completely when lights are off to save the heat inside.

@WifiSeedsPlz, i think CFL would help with yield indeed but low temp problems are only with lights off so thats not gonna help. I never knew that Indicas tend to produce denser buds, great to know.

I had an idea of using a simple incandescent light bulb as a heater. I would have to figure out a way how trap the light, probably spray paint or a cardboard box over it. Do you think that would work ?

You can buy a smaller desktop heater for less than $20. I bought one for $15, 600watts. It is heating a 4ft x 8ft walk-in closet just fine. If you are concerned about money, then using a incandescent bulb is not the way to go. Not an efficient way to create heat.
