150w HPS Question

Hey guys, I think its time go from my dinky custom fluorescent setup, to a nice dinky 150w hps. My budget is pretty tight, and I heard good things about the 150w hps lamp from e-conolight.com (link below).

Lamp:150w HPS

Who here has any experience with this lamp? Is it a pretty good bang for my buck?

Also, since I'm new to HPS, how far away from the plants is a safe distance with a lamp this small?

thanks.

i'll tell you ahead of time. keep the light fucking close to the plant with a 150 watt hps. and optimize all other grow conditions to get really dank bud. :)

Dude, there is a whole section here called the 150w club, There are many posts from people using 150W and by the looks of it the have gotten some really nice buds

I knew about the 150w club, and to be honest with you, I've posted in the thread a couple of times. But, at 57 pages long, it gets pretty hard to get a question answered.

So, any more info would be appreciated.

For about $50 after shipping, you can't really go wrong. I've had this light for a couple grows now and am satisfied. With no cool tube or tempered glass, I can keep my 150w about 3-4inches from the tops. You have to be careful though, especially during the stretch. A couple days when I forgot to raise the light a tad before work, I was stressing about it all day, came home to some slightly browned leafs.

Wow, so only 3-4 inches, thats about where I keep my fluoroscents. How have your buds been with the 150w?

Yeah... when you first get it you might want to gauge it yoruself under your own conditions. A method a lot of people use is to put your hand above your tops, and if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for the plants, so move the light up.

You can get dank herb with a 150w... the only thing you have to worry about is using the most of your light, and keeping it close to the tops. It'll keep your buds nice and dense and reduce the amount of airy popcorn bud.

Sorry for all of the questions, but how do you prefer to grow? Straight tree form, SCROG, or a small SOG?

Hey man, just finished a 150W HPS grow, and unless youve got a Dayton hooked up or are growing them in a big room, I'd say start at about 6-8 inches from the tops. After a couple of days lower them an inch, then by week's end maybe get down to 3-4 inches from the tops. I lightly roasted a couple of buds with the light too close, mainly because my closet needs better ventilation. Also if you are like me with a cheap POS cone shaped reflector, there will be one hot spot directly under the bulb. Try to bend any buds away from that spot.

LST works great for a light this size. Set up some fluoros for side lighting and its all good.

hey, many people have bought from e-conolight and have been happy. a bit of warning though, i read from a post at *****:
"When looking at HPS lights the important thing is the Power Factor. They are either NPF for Normal Power Factor or HPF or High Power Factor. NPF means 50% efficiency - 300 watts to power a 150 watt bulb. HPF is more efficient, better than 90% efficient using about 165 watts to power a 150 watt bulb.

From looking around the Econolight page it looks like the 70 and 150 watt HPS are NPF and the others are HPF."

if this is indeed true, then at least you'll be aware of how much you'll be paying for electricity. best to be in the know, right?
