150W HPS Grow Box - Need advice

Will the 120mm Computer Fan be strong enough for the exhaust?
What height should the bulb be positioned at?

Thanks. Any tips or advice will be helpful.

It looks like a good plan. I think it should be enough exhaust, might depend on how much resistance your filter has on the air flow. But with 150W a bigger fan might be a bit overkill. Can't wait to hear how it turns out!

If you could elevate the box a little, like adding 4 feet in the corners a couple inches high, you could place the passive intake holes in the very bottom of the box. On the inside you could have a wood floor that was 1 inch less WxL than the floor, and elevated an inch or so, which would allow the air to come in from the sides of the false floor. This would also help to light proof the holes.

The fan at the top of the box is just going to blow hot air back down into the grow area. Better to have it blowing across the top of the plant canopy, OR have it on the floor blowing directly up at the lamp. I would choose the latter.

The carbon filter will be you downfall if trying to power the exhaust with a small computer fan...but then again if the fan is powerful enough it may work out. If I were to use a computer fan, which I wouldn't do btw, I would get an AC powered fan.

Best of luck!

Thanks thats a good idea for the floor, didn't think about that. Yeah, the fan in the middle would work as well. The fan I plan on using for the exhaust has a 80CFM rating, so hopefully it will be sufficient. Thanks for the input.

I really don't think that PC fan will be enough, PC fan CFM ratings are very bloated, that fan will likely be 10cfm through a scrubber.

Check out This Link It answers alot of questions regarding using PC fans for cooling.

Hello HIGHdratation,
looks well, however I would have to agree with Aerohead and Baba ku. If you would choose for axial DC 12V vent, (there are some powerfull on the market - about 210 m3/h - 120CFU) you don`t have enough static pressure to blow through carbon filter. Check datasheet of your vent and tell us pressure characteristic. If will you buy AC axial vent, there would be same troubles with static pressure. I would choose rome radial vent... With this setup, you will possibly not chill enough 250w CFL neither 150HPS.
Good luck.

I read the link, seems like the fan I have won't be strong enough... Do you have any recommendations for a fan I should use thats also not to expensive?

You can use 6" duct boosters from Home DePot. Two of them stacked will pull decent through a 8" dia filter. Enough to satisfy the air of a 150 box. You will have $60 tied up in two of those fans. Use two 6" holes for passive intake if you use a 6" fan of any sort.
Look at all of this thread...

Find the Stanley Blower DIY. I think the Stanley or Lasko fans are going for about $60 these days??? They have great air flow and do a fine job for cheap.

You're in the right direction looking at the 38mm thickness 120mm fans. They handle static pressure much better than the standard 25mm thick ones.

The fan you linked is probably MORE than enough to cool your 150hps through your scrubber. That thing appears to be a behemoth and is probably going to be extremely loud at those monstrous RPMs! That's a hell of an axial.

Check out sergeant's cab here. He uses a single 120mm fan through a scrubber to cool a 150hps and then some.
