so any timer from walmart/home depot should work? I've read that some may need like a 15Amp? dunno what that means haha, but if its any timer I can just run to the store tomorrow to pick it up. Also how close can the plants get to the 150w before they burn? I'll post up shots of my mini-fridge as soon as I get everything assembled!

No, not just any timer! Make sure that it is grounded (three prongs in the plug and three holes in the outlet), and make sure it is at least rated 10% higher than everything you are going to run on it (lights, fans, bubblers, etc). Safety First!

awesome thanks for the advice so far man, when plugging it all in do I just plug the ballast plug into the timer?

That would be correct. Make sure to set the timer...lol.

Also, my advice would be to get a mechanical timer...not a digital one.

THERE'S NO NEED TO SHOP FOR AN EXPENSIVE TIMER IF YOU ARE GROWING SMALL , EVEN WITH A FEW FANS AND FLOROS RUNNING ON THE SAME TIMER. MY BOY j GOT THIS TIMER FROM THE LOCAL HARDWARE SHOP AND IT HAS A STRIP OF 10 OUTLETS RUNNING THROUGH IT. IT HAS TWO FANS , ONE RED 660MN LED 28 LIGHT PANEL, ONE 50W HPS "VERTICAL" , ONE 150W HPS WITH A TRACK SYSTEM AND TWO 45W FLOROS ON THAT STRIP.

I don't know too much about these cheap timers, but I will say that every timer will have a rating for how much electricity it can handle going though it. This will be rated in amps.
Most small units will be rated at about 15 amps. If running more than 15 amps through one can cause a meltdown of the cheap timer.
Also, these types of timers are not very consistent. There can be a window of up to 30 mins for the on/off. Which means that you could potentially bring about hermies with such an inconsistent light schedule. A mix up of only 15 minutes on a regular/irregular basis can be a problem for the plants survival mechanism.

These may not actually be the best choice for a new grower who has not yet dialed in their grow. They may blame all sorts of other things that may went wrong, but the timer thing is a sight unseen event and may not get the scrutiny it deserves, and may well be the only problem the new grower has. The timer shown probably does not have a ground prong on the plug either.

For ~$20 you can get a very nice Intermatic digital timer with battery back-up at HD or Lowes.
It is spot on accurate and will not lose it's settings no matter what happens with the current.
These units allow the grower to completely control the electricity of his grow and know that it is proper.

awesome hoosier. Looks like I'm going to be buying one of those 20 buck ones. Im growing autoflowers so definitely any light errors could be critical, so it seems that the somewhat expensive one is more reliable... thanks!

Good point about the tabs. I've read they're an ass pain. I've got practically the same thing in veg but the tabs don't pull out. They're just snapped back and forth for on or off. It's not balls on accurate with the clock but the mechanical cycle is consistent. If the power goes out, it has to be reset to clock time.

I use a digital hydrofarm w/battery backup in flower. If the power goes off, you don't have to reset. It gains 15 minutes every 10 weeks so it's not accurate by clock standards but it's too incremental over time to cause any noticeable stress. It's got 8 programmable events. I can automatically give a stretch-prone plant a more gradual flower transition but that's not anything I do very often.

good call krush. that's the same thing hydrofarm puts their name on and charges $20. Other than the fact mine is fast, it works fine and is an easy setup.

I have two digital ones kinda like krushonkush has a link to and a mechanical one from hydrofarm. I use the mechanical one (push down tabs with a chronosynchronous (I think I just made a word) dial) out of preference.

To Hoosierdaddy's and PD's points, just be sure the thing is rated and pick one that suits the need and budget. Safety first.

The battery backup piece is a nice value-add to the digital models available IMHO, but never a factor for me...I go and check on the girls whenever lights on is supposed to happen (usually) and can easily twist the dial to the first block of the "on" section of tabs that I have depressed and know that 12 hours from then the bugger will go off without a hitch.

It is easier to grip and rip the mechanical timer. The digital ones are easy, but not quite as easy...

and re: time leakage with timers....first I wonder if this is done intentionally...second....I like it since I am a paranoid fuck and would hate for the utility company to think I have lights on a timer...haha...I know in the 150W club it really isn't a drop in the bucket, but regardless of draw, there is still usage data coming out of my house that could reveal an aspect of my grow...the timer. With a certain degree of slippage and intentional slight shifting of cycles it may avoid any current or future queries on some database.

lol

yup...stoned...

Good point. Both of mine are grounded and rated 1800 watts. I'm nowhere near that and didn't realize lesser load capacities were available. Thanks for the info.

You guys have convinced me to go pick up a digital timer. My mechanical one at best is accurate within 15 minutes and I have to reset it every several weeks.

I had several valentine dates, but now they are all hanging upside down in my closet :]

I'll be trying out some new containers with Mircokote root pruning paint this next round while also introducing Merlin's Magic to the cab. Keep it real 150w crew!
