grumblez, thanks very much and I appreciate the rep. I'm getting a little nervous with the first time and all. Wondering how many fans to cull is a mystery. I just chopped 50 fans this evening and will probably cut another several dozen in 5 to 7 days.

I threw the large handful of fans in the disposal. Clogged it up completely! I had greens coming up through the other drain and had to get a plunger to unstop it. I guess the fiber was keeping everything together even though is was chopped because it was one big lump of green goo.

if i sprouted a couple plants under fluorescents and let them grow to their 3rd set of leaves, would that be a good time to switch to my 150 hps?
cause i read that using a hps from start isnt that good and you should use fluoros at early veg, i just got my 150 on friday so im new to when to use it

Robertwantsganj, it's a little hard to say w/o knowing a little more about your strain. If it's sativa or hybrid, what you're talking about sounds pretty good. It could stretch as much as 3 to 4 times it's beginning flower height. Add a few environmental factors and stretch could possibly exceed 4x. The only problem of using the 150 for seedlings is node spacing might increase, the lights a little too intense to park the seeding directly under it for now and the power consumption. None of these factors (with the possible exception of node spacing) says you can't raise seedling under the HPS but you're right, fluoros are the ticket fro seedlings and veg plants. IMO, get blue or daylight as opposed to red color. Sometimes you'll see the package marked cool or warm. Cool is blue and warm is red. Cool (or blue) will keep node spacing tighter.

Sometimes the first run of something might not be the perfect size but take mental notes and make necessary adjustments for the next round.

How much headroom do you have in flower? What grow style are you planning and how many plants at one time? I'm assuming you have something in the neighborhood of 3 square feet of space? I'd just hate to see you flip 4 to 5" plants and end up with a less than full box. There's plenty of time for you to dial things in and get more efficiency but the right size at the flip will go a long way towards a satisfying harvest.

Can I even put a 150w CMH bulb in a 150w HPS ballast????

I've heard of people doing that for the 400w hps... Why not the 150?

Haha. Just yesterday I tried to grind up some leaves and stems in a blender, but I didn't accomplish much. I'm going to let it all soak in water for a few days and then give it ago. If it doesn't work I'll just have to dump all the trimmings together. My protocol is to drive away from my location a lil bit and park a few blocks from previously selected garbage bin. I walk the rest of the way because of I'm paranoid a camera could catch my plates and see me dumping. Because there are there are risks beyond my control I like to control the ones I can even if they aren't all that significant. Also, I like to dump my run off down my toilet and I use a strainer to prevent any plant material from messing up the plumbing.

I guess I'm in the minority then....I just throw my trim, used rockwoool, and other crap in the kitchen garbage bag under the sink. Then it goes out to the curb with the rest of the trash. Seems to have worked for me for the past 40 years or so, but maybe your garbage men go thru your stuff a bit more. Mine can't get it into the back of the truck fast enough.

My township's trash crew even have a big robot arm that picks up and dumps the can even...lol...I put the trim in a SEPARATE bag in the can so that when it dumps, it is contained in something that CERTAINLY has no linkage back to the house such as junkmail or documents with identifying information.

They may find the plant, but they will have a whole township to scrutinize if it is a lead that they wish to follow.

You have to purchase a special conversion ballast. Not sure if they make one for 150s. But, you can not put a CMH bulb into a HPS ballast.

Haha, if's it's good enough for you Pd, I'm going back to trashing. I live in the county and have to carry mine. I guess there's not much chance of getting popped. Thanks for the reassurance.:D

Great idea. I have shredder and usually shred anything that has identification. Great tip, grumblez. Thanks much.

hoosier's right, magma. If you want to go CMH, the ballast is a little more expensive than a typical 150HPS flood or spot.

150w PSMH flood and area from e-conolight.com. It includes the bulb for about $85 shipped

Here's a good price on a 150wHPS flood and area light. It comes with a bulb for about $52.00 shipped. This one doesn't have capacitor. LOL, I Googled the catalog number and all the mj sites returned first.

Here's the same (HPS) with a cap for about $22 bucks more.

well the strain im growing now is orange kush. i vegged it under 2 daylight 100 watt equivalents. after the flip i used 2 soft white 150 watt equivalent which still gives off a slightly redish orangish color. my plant grew pretty slowly under the fluoros in veg, sped up after i threw it into flowering. i used those for 3 weeks then got my hps and switched to that. i have a orange kush album in my profile.
but i ordered white widow seeds through this seed bank and was wondering if i should veg it under the same fluoros or should i just start it under the fluoros then change it to hps after a couple set of leaves come out? ive read grow diaries where they grew it completely under hps

I do all my vegging under CFLs then switch to HPS to flower. But I've heard you can veg. under HPS. The key to CFL is to keep them real close to the plant. Like 1". And I use a bunch (8) of 'em. That's what 8X26=208? And I've also read people say that the "equivalent" junk is just that. Junk. It's pretty much just a marketing ploy.

They're a pretty good equivalent to the eye, like reading light. qdavid is right, you can veg under hps. Nodes might not be as close but they'll probably grow faster the more radiation they have.

Bob, I have done it all different ways with all different lights. (save for led's)
And I always try to stick with vegging with multiple CFL or flouro. The bluer the better...I use 6500K bulbs. These make healthy rich colored plants that will do great once in hps.

If you want more bud, there are ways to go about it...but the most important is to allow the roots plenty of pot to grow, and allow them to veg long enough to be able to yield. Just a week or two more veg time can often make many grams final product difference.

Less is more...most always, and folks hose up more grows by adding stuff. Veg this, flower than, big bloom this, and that...sheesh...
Best thing IMO is to let things happen and feed sparingly until the plant shows it wants more food. Once you overfeed or waterlog one, it may take a couple of weeks or longer of proper care to get them back on track, and sometimes they suffer through all cycles due to an overfeed lockout or something.

Best of luck, and let us know how your grow turns out.

hey guys, I'm going to be using a 150w HPS for my mini-fridge AF grow. I'm going to be using CFL's for the first couple weeks for veg in peat pellets, I'm probably going to switch to the HPS when I transplant them into their 2 gal pots. I was just wondering, how close can the plant get to the light before being burned? and I have one really noob question, do I need to get a timer for my 150w HPS? I'm getting it from HTGsupply, could anyone point me to a timer? I'm assuming you can't just pull out the plug and plug it back in later... Thanks for the help so far guys... some of you guys prove that 150w are great!
