my 150w ballast gets too hot to touch when i dont have a fan on it. I dont know ive heard others say it doesnt get too bad but just remeber the cooler electronic parts run the longer they last. I threw a heatsink and fan on the top of mine and now it only gets warm, much better than too hot to touch.
What wiring diagram did you use for it? I think the hot wire coming out of the coil going directly to the socket isn't right...but it could just be a model specific thing.
