150/250w bulb in a 400w ballast?

Can you run a lower wattage bulb in a 400w ballast? If you can does the ballast run any cooler then it does with the 400?

It's a 400w ballast for a reason...

400w ballast=400w bulbs.

Just spend the $40 for the right bulb or you will run into problems.

That's what I thought, a friend (who's a good guy but is known for pulling information out of his ass) told me this was doable so I wanted to make sure before I did what I assumed it would do, which is burn down my house.
