If you can keep it cool, is a 1000W MH too much light for a 3'x3'x6' tent?

It's my buddy's first grow and he got a free 1000W MH bulb, ballast, and reflector. He hooked up his 6" 450 CFM fan pushing through a carbon filter. He says he can keep it at 77*F. He also said he had the air conditioner on and the door wide open.

My opinion is yes it's too much light for that small of an area. I think that an experienced grower could probably manage it. Even if he manages it, his efficiency is going to be WAY down there with his light, fan, etc all taken into consideration.

I'm looking for opinions, tips, or suggestions. What are the pros and cons?

How many plants , Hydro , Organic etc ? Keeping cool is the main thing . Few instances where to much light is a bad thing . I don't think this is one .. want to keep finishing height down .

Thanks for the reply. Good question.
He has 6 (three strains, bagseed) plants right now in 7" squares, Roots Organics soil. Nothing yet but pH corrected water.

Squares being Rockwool (hydro) depending on strains you should be fine . Hydro moves quick don't over Veg . Some of the Tent pros can assist you im sure . Heat from light is the Elephant in the room . Lighting should be fine . Sorry for slow response ...... My bad you said soil , Moves a lot slower .

I'm happy to report that he took my advice and traded the 1000W for a 600W and only had to dish out for the bulb.
