1000w or 2 x 600w?

Ok, 1kw it is. Looks like $300 for a Future Brite 1k electronic ballast on mdhydro. Looks like eBay is still not caught up on 1k electronic ballast prices.

I'm thinking Hydrofarm Radiant AC and a 6" Vortex. Can-66 or similar to come later when the stink comes.

Last time I ran a Sun System EconoCool with a 400w, but I don't think that reflector will put out as nice of a footprint as a Radiant on a 4x4. I think a 6" CoolTube might not be enough, unless I get an external batwing reflector to go with it. Or hang it vertically in the center of the HydroHut.

I've also heard good things about these "Silver Star" reflectors...

Thoughts, opinions?

I had one of the silverstar hoods. Really well built. Careful handling it though. The little clip that holds the glass in sometimes just moves out of the way alowing the glass to freely slide out.. not good. It was a Little too big for a c22 cab. So I returned it for a cool tube.

Got to be a 1000w in a 4x4 space, I think that 4x4 is really inefficient use of grow area for two 600's. I would go the 1000w.

A kw would be fine but I vote for 2x 600w because of the better spread. You can get dual 600w ballasts so you would only need one ballast. 600w is more efficient than a kw though. However 2x is 75w /sq foot so a little tight of a space for that much light. Kw is 62.5w /sq foot.

Dual 600w

It's actually a 52" x 52" (18.7sqft) space that I'm dealing with, not 48" x 48". The "4' x 4'" specs on the HydroHut means that it can fit a 4' x 4' flood table. So a 1kw would be a tad bit over 53wpsf, and 2x600w would be just under 64wpsf.

I'd prefer to stay away from the dual ballasts, unless they make electronic / digital ones. Since electricity costs so much out here, digital ballasts will easily pay for themselves. Plus it's going to reside in my bedroom, so I'd prefer no buzzing.

Come to think of it, 64wpsf scares me as far as cooling w/o an A/C unit. I think I'm pretty stuck on the 1kw for many reasons, although I have heard numerous reports that 600w is the most efficient horticultural light.

I'd really like that 4' x 4' growing space, as opposed to the 3' x 3' that I had on the last run, although 600w would be great in a 3' x 3'.

My opinion might be a little biased, but I love em :D

That combo of fan/scrubber and either hood (radiant AC or silverstar) will work great for you though.

1000 watt is great although 2 600 watt lights provide spectrums that over lap...
which provide more light to the plants increasing coverage by 30-40% (page 178 of Marijuana Horticulture The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Marijuana Grower's Bible)

The Benefits of Using Lower Wattage Bulbs Include:
-More point sources of light
-More even distribution of light
-Ability to place lamps closer to the garden w/o burning tops

Anywho a 4x4 area could def. go either way..

i was in the same predicament... but i went with a 1kw on my first grow, and used it for the first couple grows... but since then ive updated to a couple 600's now... im liking the 600s... whatever you choose will be fine, i mean it will grow some killer bud ha

I thought Id chime in on this. Have you considered the mix spectrum 1K lights? You get a perfect spectrum and 1Kw too. You are restricted to only double light reflectors with this option though. As for single bulb reflectors, id check out the econocool by Sunlight Supply. Same idea as a silverstar but slightly cheaper.

I had a EconoCool for my first run. Pretty good reflector for the price, I thought, and seemed to put out a bigger pattern than a Hydrofarm Daystar. I don't think it's quite what I want for a 1k, though. Upon closer inspection of the SilverStar pictures, it looks like it's very similar in shape / footprint as the EconoCool, but with an outer "shell"!

As for doing mixed spectrum 1k's, as in dual 1k's? That's a bit more flower power than I'm ready to deal with at the moment., although I would absolutely love to be able to run a 2k grow. :yummy:

For my personal needs, just a single 600w would probably be enough, but a little extra never hurt anyone... :canabis:

Alright everyone, thanks for all the great input! Still not 100% decided, but I think I might go with the 1k, and see if I can get the initial setup to fit under $1k ($1k for 1k!), considering I have NO grow equipment whatsoever right now.

hey clowntown if you go with the 2) 600 you will be happier...if you want to ever dial down your grow (like i do in the summer months)turn off a light....not to mention more lumens and more watts....i love my 600....

Yeah, that does sound very appealing... being able to scale down or up easily without too many adjustments.

I've just noticed that BGHydro has the HydroHut Mini for $170 now, down from $200. Maybe I should just start with a single 600w grow in a 3x3 HH, and add another one in the future if I still feel the need for it?

I'm going to need to sleep on this one! Or at least take a nap on it!

i have a 1000 watt and a 600 watt and a 400 watt a 150 watt.....i like my 600 best by far...i believe a 600 watt hps puts out 96000 lumens a 1000 watt like 125,000 lumens....600 more bang for your buck

But I've used 6oo's and 1ooo's too, and the 1k's will give you a heavier harvest of bigger, denser nuggets. So I go with the 1k's now. But if electrical usage or space were an issue, I'd use the 6's again. I think next time I move, I'll be getting a big HydroHut (4'x7'x7') and running 2 1k's in it with a carbon scrubber and 6" vertex. I am basically running the same thing now, but with a huge, heavy wooden chamber I built myself. The quality is great, but I am sick of building these wooden chambers, the HH just sounds so easy.

Normally I'd say 2 600's but for a 4x4 I'd go w/ the 1k. Grow'em tall.
