1000w light with 600w ballast???

Hello,

I was wondering if a 1000w MH light would work with a 600w ballast. I just need it to work for a couple days till I have time to get another 600w MH light.

Has anyone done this? I think it should be safe since the light is capable of taking more power, but I just wanted to get a second opinion.

Cant have my ladies dying on me!!

I wouldnt overrate the lamp on a HID load or even underrate it.They should match exactly. In incandescent loads you can underrate(put a 40 watt lamp in a socket rated for 60 W) but you are talking about overrating on an HID load.I would never do it man especially when you're getting the correct lamps in a couple days

lamps and ballasts have a rating for a reason. Id say if that light sparks and lights up, it's not worth the potential risks, like sparkjumper said.

I hope you find a way to solve this problem and i wish you luck.

my .02 would be to buy an additional replacement light when you purchase your next one, to have around incase this situation arises again.

Stick to the same hours, use any light you have - NOT the 1000Watter - to keep them awake as usual, they won't grow much but if you leave them in the dark for a couple of days you risk your plants finishing too early. my $0.02

maybe if iut was like a 650w bulb, but thats a 400w difference
keep the fans running in the dark too, need good air circulation still. otherwise theyll start to mold

May I interchange lamp types or wattages while using the same ballast?
NO! Each ballast is designed to operate a certain wattage lamp type. If you are using a 250 watt metal halide, you can not replace it with a 400 watt metal halide with out changing to the appropriate ballast. Likewise, you can not remove a 250 metal halide lamp and replace it with a 250 watt high pressure sodium without changing the ballast. If you do this it will either not light or greatly reduce the life of both the lamp and ballast. A gross mismatch could even cause electrical shock or fire.

Great Thanks for the input guys. Here's what I did...

I had a 600w HPS lying around and used that to hold me off until i get the new MH.
I know of many people vegging with HPS, so it should work as long as the times dont change... RIGHT? Im almost positive that this should be ok.

Just letting you know what I did, incase others need something to reference.
