1000w hps set up

Hey guys, I'm in the market for a 1000w set up and I can't decide whether I want a magnetic or digital ballast.

How loud are 1000 watt ballasts? Significantly louder than a 400w?

And a 6" Vortex fan pushin 449cfm across the bulb in an aircooled hood and also exhausting a 144cf room would be sufficient, right?

Not sold on digi ballasts yet. You should pull air across the bulb instead of pushing it. My 6 in Vortex is way more than enough for my 1000 hps in my 4x4 Home box.

Yes my 1000w ballast is a bit louder than my 400watter was, not that much tho'. Yields more than make up for the hassle of it however!!!

are there any particular brands of 1000w magnetic ballasts that are quieter/cooler/more reliable?

If sound is what makes you paranoid then you'll be more worried about the sound of the 6" inline centrifugal and the sound of the air woosging inside and out of your duct run.

I have never once been worried about the sound from a ballast.For years I have slept with the ballast housed in the same room (kight in an actual closet or cab) and I never once could hear the hum of the ballast unless I walked over to it and got real close to it.

Now multiple ballasts may make some unwanted noise but it's nothing you can't take care of.

I'm with Jnugg. With that fan, I doubt you'll hear the ballast.

thanks guys, upon further reading you're right, the ducts are gonna be the loudest.
