1000/2000w grow box

I wanted to get any input I could for a grow I plan on doing in the next couple months. I'll provide as much info as possible as to what exactly I want to do and needed advice on equipment and specifics about size of chillers/fans etc.

So to it, I havnt entirely decided if I want to do 1k or 2k somewhat worried about the electricity. I know the basic rule is to always pay utility bill on time and dont steal elec and shouldnt have anything to worry about but I still seem somewhat concerned because it would be at a rental property.

I want to build either a 4x4 box for a 1k or 4x8 for a 2k, using 5 gal buckets for dwc how tall should I make the box?

I dont plan on the room being entirely sealed but create negative pressure and have an inlet vent to bring in fresh air from an outside room. Wondering if this would provide enough cooling with an exhaust fan that I wouldnt have to use ac or not.

Also what size water chiller should I look at to chill 9 buckets for 1k or 18 for 2k (5gal buckets)

This is your first grow so I'll suggest you get a 400W Ceramic Metal Halide and grow a couple plants under it first.

Get your moms going and get your cloning down pat during your first 2-3 grows.

If you still think you need 1Kw worth of flower power at that point, you'll already have a kick ass light for your moms and clones and all the grow experience you should need to be successful.

*** Edit *** 2k without A/C? HAHAHAHA! Seriously, you have no idea what kind of heat and infra-red heat an HPS lamp puts out.
I have a 5,000btu window A/C and when that 1K HPS light goes on, that A/C is on as well. I have about an hour without A/C before my room would overheat and my plants would fry. I don't currently have the cash for equipment to run that light with proper ventilation, so I'm currently running on 220w of PL-L CFL lamps Sweet stuff *** Edit ***

Actually this wouldnt be my first grow, and I actually did start out with a 400w CMH. Did the grow in a closet under stupid conditions without a ph pen or tds meter.... ya dumb but survived the grow and learned a lot.

But yes I guess i didnt know how much heat would be put off from the 1k's but I apreciate you letting me know plain jane air cooling wont cut it. I'll make sure to add the AC to the list of things to get. And actually yes I plan on using my CMH for moms in another box.

If you are using 1K's, it would help for them to be cool tubes or air cooled. Also, cool the lights from an inlet that goes from the outside of the cab, through the lights, and back out, that way you don't have to have a carbon scrubber slowing your fans that cool the lights. Then have a separate inlet for fresh air and to be expelled through a carbon scrubber. Keep in mind negative pressure for your cab. I would go with 1 8" fan for both of your lights. IMO, the best you shoot for w/out an a/c unit for ONE 1k light is 10 degrees above ambient, and that is having them vented properly. It will give you a ballpark figure on how much heat those bad boys put out.

I'm just curious, what will you build this box out of? A 4'x8' structure is pretty massive to have in an apartment.

I also would suggest a cool tube with a powerful fan. I didn't like the DIY ones I came across too much so I made my own very simple version. Different site, but check it out.

Cool DIY, you should post it here. How big a bulb are you using? I'd think with a 1000k you'd need to go bigger rather than smaller with the adaptors, but that's easy enough.

Gimme a little time and I will post it here. I designed mine for a 400w HPS. Are the bulbs for the 1000 HPS' alot bigger? I used a bake-a-round but I'm sure those those glass tubes in the craft store and bigger adapters can satisfy a MH bulb.

The 1000w hps I have is only about an inch longer than my 400w hps and about the same diameter. But the 1k runs a lot hotter and would probably require bigger ducting and fan.

I think I have decided to run a 2k system. It seems from what you guys have said and makes sense that running cool tubes from a 6" or 8" fan with an AC is the best route. And yes pharma the box will be big but I plan on setting it up in a room by itself, I'm by myself and a 3br apartment so I can get away with having a big box.

btw with a scrubber and it being a sealed box would there be any reason for smell to leak outside of the box much less the room. I understand if you're right next to it you'll smell but aside from that what's your experience with odor

I'm not 100% on what I'm going to build it out of but figured I'd just build a small room from plywood and 2x4. Any help with this would be great as well, as far as the best way to build a sealed room.... If it helps what I want to do is build a 4x8x8 box that will be in a spare bedroom or basement.
